This 4 CD set opens with 'Judge Not' a simple ska tune and ends with Bob and his acoustic guitar on 'Redemption Song' - a live performance in Pittsburgh in 1980, his last concert. Listen to the crowd noise swelling towards the end. A transition was coming. Although Bob surely knew he was ill, his brain tumour having been diagnosed only recently, his audience was unaware and he surely had no idea that within 8 months he would have passed on. Makes this rendition that much more poignant and a tear jerker, I don't mind telling you. In between these two tracks you will be treated to some of the well known hits, extended play and dub versions of other songs, live performances, some little known earlier releases and at least one cut totally unknown prior to this (Acoustic Medley).

It's all here - the development of the sound from early ska through rocksteady to funky and even punky reggae to his heavy bass and drum rhythms. What this set does best is show how between 1962 and 1981, one man and one band, took a home grown rhythm added and experimented with other influences (R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues), created various flavours of Reggae and then took it and musically conquered the world. The booklet that comes with the set is just a little sweetener. It's not possible to get a more complete story of Bob and the Wailers without buying all the individual Island Record albums.
