Music Review: Marley and the Wailers Very Best!

As an introduction to my actual review, I would like to say this; My big brother (2 years my senior) was of little to NO use to me growing up....he constantly antagonized me....he frequently "skimmed" quarters from my coin jar....and he always got his way with the television set. He also left me with childhood "scars"----- when we recieved KISS Alive II in the mail circa 1978 (we pooled our allowance together), he quickly ripped open the package....went straight to the tattoes.....and proceded to take every one that he wanted.....I was left with the Rose and Snare drum tattoes.....totally devastaing! However, many, many years later I can appreciate big Bro' and realize that many of the artists I love to this day, was exposed to me through him---- RUSH, Styx, Boston, Kansas, Etc....and of course, the GREAT Bob Marley. All that to say this: If nothing else, Big brothers (and even Dad and Mom) can be a great source for discovering music one might not have otherwise discovered. As for "Rastaman Vibration", it was my first exposure to Bob's music, and to this day remains my favorite from him. I love many of his other releases---- "Kaya", "Exodus", "Uprising", Etc..., but this album, to me, is his most 'real' and 'pure' musical expression. Ironically, "RV" seems to be almost overlooked by many fans of the genre. Out of Bob's body of work, by far this is his most socially conscience recording---- Good, Evil, Political, Religion, Oppression, Unnecessary death, War, Greed, Positives and Negatives. This is one "DEEP" album.....but one may not immediately realize the seriousness of the commentary underneath the 'slinky' grooves and general 'vibe' of the music heard on "RV".....and to me thats the beauty of this album. You can listen intently to understand this Man's beliefs and philosophies, or you can simply 'skim' the surface and let this wonderful music enlighten and enchant you. Either way, its one of the most powerful, moving listening experiences I have ever encountered. "Johnny Was" IS one of the most moving songs I have heard from any artist...the hairs still stand up when I hear this great tune! As a matter of fact, EVERY song on this album is great! (your not likely to need that 'Skip' button for this CD). If I were pressed to name favorites, they would be "Nightshift", "Who the Cap Fit", "Johnny Was", "WAR" and "Roots, Rock, Reggae".....but like I said, this is one of those rare albums that I press play and walk away. "Rastaman Vibration" and some of his other works WILL go down in history as some of the worlds most important albums ever recorded....if you don't have this, you are definitely missing out! BUY NOW!
P.S. Special 'Praise' has to go to the 'I Threes' and 'The Wailers' on this particular release....They really "Shine" on this one.
