Music Reviews of Together Through Life

Music Review: A Great Dylan Effort
Rating: 4 Stars

Don't pass on this album. After first listening to Dylan's craggy Tom Waites-like voice on the 30-second track samples, I did not like it although the accordian-flavored "This Dream of You" was immediately likable. On repeated listenings, I discovered "Beyond Here Lies Nothin", "Forgetful Heart", and " If You Ever Go To Houston", which in addition to "This Dream of You", are the best songs on Together Through Life. "It's All Good" is familiar and reminded me of "Political World" from Oh Mercy.

I don't like Dylans's Chuck Berry influenced "Jolene" and "Shake Shake Mama" nor the bluesy "My Wife's Hometown" and "I Feel a Change Comin' On" since I prefer Dylan the balladeer. One odd track - "Life is Hard" evokes Dylan the nightclub crooner.

The musicianship on Together Through Life is excellent and it has enough enjoyable Dylan tracks to make it a buy.

Music Review: Good, Not Great
Rating: 3 Stars

While Dylan's last four albums have represented good, solid work, musically they hardly represent the level of creativity, innovation or diversity of his best, such as Freewheelin, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde, Nashville Skyline, Blood on the Tracks or Infidels. Sure, there are a few standouts on each, such as Life is Hard or, to a lesser extent, This Dream of You, present on the current album. But the primary identity of this album, as well as the past three, is the blues, which one suspects Dylan could produce in his sleep. And the limitation of the blues is that it's ultimately a monochromatic genre, offering only limited tones and hues, which by now are only distinguished by style or the use of different instruments. The underlying melodies or essential expression have all been heard before.

Bob Dylan: Together Through Life Songbook PVG
I'm driving my 64 1/2 Mustang convertible in the Arizona sun, listening to Bob Dylan. Just like I did 40 years ago. Just like I'm doing today. As I've aged, he has. I like to think we've grown up together, getting wiser as time goes by. Read what Alex Beam in the Boston Globe has to say in Dylanology 101, March 20, 2009.

Dylan has been here, there, everywhere. I've seen him in big venues and little ones. I've taken my children and their friends. They've taken me.

Together Through Life is superb. Incredible. There is always a new favorite song or line . . .

Music Review: Classic Dylan
Rating: 5 Stars

Well I've been a Dylan fan since age 15 back in '78, I've got all the albums on vinyl & CD and loads of boots etc, seen him in concert over 30 times and met the great man twice in one week back in '93. I'm not such a big fan of the recent "trilogy" I think Dylan became fashionable in recent times and the last three albums are way overrated. I much prefer his 70's & 80's work (Desire,Street Legal,Slow Train,Shot of Love,Infidels & Oh Mercy bieng highlights). But I like this record, the vibes are good, the tex-mex accordian sounds remind me of Desire. Dylan sounds like he's enjoying himself here, I've been playing this a lot and I highly recommend it. Also check out my favourite all time Dylan Track "Wigwam" from 1970's "Self Portrait" Genius!!!

Music Review: Just a GOOD record
Rating: 3 Stars

Dylan maintains his croak vocal approach...which I love...you HAVE to at this point. While this record doesn't rock as much as some songs on "Love & Theft" or have the variety of songs like on "Modern Times, "It's All Good". I don't mind the accordion but I'm not a big fan of accordion in mass doses. However, it does give the album a different flavor...and when you've been around as long as Dylan has, that is a must. There is only so much you can do with 1-4-5 progressions over the years. But I was ecstatic to hear some tasty Mike Campbell slide.
Like another reviewer said, "if you like Dylan, you'll like this record".
But album of the year??? In my opinion it is a bit laboring so I am not so sure.
