Music Review: Dylan Sees the Scorn and Keeps Rocking

All of the incessant whining that droned from the music world when Bob Dylan became a Born-Again Christian, and put that newfound faith in his music, was certainly worth it. Dylan's conversion resulted in three great albums, each containing some of the most honest and realistic Christian-oriented music ever recorded, even if the second in that trilogy, 1980's "Saved," is the least memorable.
But being least in those three great albums is no dubious honor by any means; "Saved" combined the lean, not-backing-down attitude that was obvious on "Slow Train Coming" and added a gospel texture to it, creating a unique sound and message for a mainstream album in 1980. The predictable, empty moans of "judgmental" and "dogmatic" did surface as usual, but the music makes them all irrelevant. Dylan gives a sweet treatment to the gospel standard 'Satisfied Mind' (even if he doesn't outdo the Byrds' gorgeous version from 1965), and rambles on with honesty and passion with magnificent cuts like the title track, 'In the Garden,' the nearly-rollicking 'Solid Rock,' and the lovely 'Covenant Woman' (the best song on the album by the way, with the poetic 'Saving Grace').
The musical accompaniment can leave something to be desired in some parts of the album, but Dylan's relentlessness makes up for it. It's almost hilarious how quickly Bob Dylan owed the music world something after instilling his Christian faith into his music, despite already having (at least) five of rock n' roll's greatest records in his cannon. "Saved" would be followed the next year by Dylan's last overtly Spiritual album, "Shot of Love," which was the best of the Born Again trilogy. If its predecessor and successor overshadow "Saved," it's no worry - "Saved" remains an outstanding, truth-touting piece of work. It was as though Bob Dylan took in the scorn he received from his faith and shrugged as if to say "And...?"
