Music reviews of Twoism

Music Review: Thirty-six fine minutes of vintage Boards beauty!
Rating: 4 Stars

Warp Records' announcement of plans to produce Boards of Canada's mythical "Twoism" for commercial release is certainly one of 2002's most exciting surprises. After "Music Has the Right to Children" rocketed them into the upper echelons of the electronic popularity club, Boards got really quiet. We waited years with nothing to satisfy our hunger but a four-track EP (though it was quite lovely) until finally "Geogaddi" came out earlier this year. But while we were waiting for that, many of us turned to the darker corners of music chat rooms and internet music-trading where we discovered the astonishing truth that "Music Has the Right" was nowhere near beginners luck. Not only did Boards record a chunk of stuff for Skam Records well before "Music Has the Right," but there were even a number of excellent independent releases issued in preposterously low numbers. (By the way, as far as I know, Amazon's claim that "Twoism" is Boards' first recording is false.) Those few who managed to get copies of these recordings were more than just a little fortunate. In 2001 I saw an original 1995 copy of "Twoism" on eBay, with bids approaching $2,000. Warp's release of this fine album is the luckiest break for electronic fans since the ol' Warp collected Plaid's side projects on "Trainer."

"Twoism"'s sound is not too far off from that of "Music Has the Right," and that's not a bad thing. More of the bomp-chicka-bomp conventional beats, more of the dreamy, layered shimmering synths, more low-key sampling, more of the simple melodies. Its not a revolutionary sound, but it is a sound that Boards of Canada not only mastered but pretty much introduced. It is a testament to their quality that so ridiculously much music is now casually compared to Boards of Canada. Its *their* sound. They own it. But "Twoism," though earlier and not nearly as polished as "Music Has the Right," is far more than an interesting document of a young group's growing pains. And although tracks like "Sixtyniner," "Oirectine," "Twoism," and "Smokes Quantity" will no doubt sound very familiar to Boards fans, this album is no redundant recap of sounds we already know too well. It is an album in and of itself, with its own merits. And it stands up nicely against "Music Has the Right" and "Geogaddi." Among its differences is (believe it!) an all-out up-tempo jam ("Basefree").

Not to be too greedy and already start begging for more, but I do really, really hope that we'll see a "BOC Maxima" re-release come down the pike sometime soon. That album kills me. Its rough, yes. But there is something truly dreamy about 1996's "BOC Maxima," which is less beat-oriented than the more recent Boards material. "BOC Maxima" mixed that ethereal - psychedelic, if you will - sounds with utter simplicity and a sound that reminds one of "Bladerunner"-era Vangelis. Some of my faves from "BOC Maxima" (if you care) are "m9" and "Red Moss."

But I'm digressing here. Just prepare for another high quality Boards release. This is as necessary to your collection as "Geogaddi."

Description of Twoism

Remastered re-release of an early, limited Boards Of Canada release, this nine track mini album is available on CD for the first time, seven years after its original vinyl only release. Track nine '1986 Summer Fire' is unlisted on artwork. Includes Boards Of Canada sticker. Digipak. Warp. 2002.
Originally issued in 1995, Boards of Canada's Twoism EP makes it clear the Scottish duo of Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin were on to something from the start. As their first recorded work, scarce, vinyl-only copies of Twoism have been lustily sought after by rabid fans since the 1998 release of BoC's amazing, impossibly original Music Has The Right To Children and the quieter, but equally devastating Geogaddi. While not as adventuresome as those records, this EP is still Boards Of Canada all the way, as ample chunks of the band's unsettling and deeply involving style are easily found in songs like "Smokes Quantity" and the title track. Other songs such as the almost danceable "Seeya Later" show a more straightforward ambient/techno side that, while presented more nakedly here, is still quite apparent in their later work. While some might be disappointed after spending God knows what on a copy of Twoism only to find it suddenly available anywhere, others looking for more of BoC's melancholy, spellbinding compositions should take fast advantage. --Matthew Cooke
