Music Review: Return to form after a disappointing sophomore Cd

Now this is a little livelier. After a bright start with their debut Cd Outskirts I thought that Blue Rodeo lost steam with Diamond Mine. Notwithstanding some standout songs the sophomore effort rather slowed to a crawl about half way through its 59+ minutes. Casino starts off with a brighter tempo and keeps going for its mere 37 minutes - and I'd rather have a shorter Cd with no filler any day. For me longer is rarely better!
After three Poco style faster numbers the band settles into Montreal. This is the kind of slow country pop song for which the band is popular (in Canada anyway). Trust Yourself and After the Rain represent the other style of songs that the band is known for - medium tempo burning rock song with really good guitar breaks. Two Tongues reminds me of American garage music from the mid sixties, except that the sound is superior. Time could be a song from the 1960's group The Outsiders (Time Won't Let Me).
Casino is a return to form. It is a solid and enjoyable Cd deserving of wider popularity in the sometimes rather insular US of A!
