Music Review: BOC's Holy Grail

I was working at a Top-40 radio station in the rural south when Imaginos was first released. I had caught the creepy ad campaign in the trades and was very intrigued. By this time, it seemed that BOC was yesterday's news. So many of the original members had left, it was not uncommon to hear them referred to as "Two Oyster Cult". However, I still wanted the LP, so I asked the Music Director at the station to see if he could get a copy for me from CBS. No chance, since we were a tiny market and not worth sending product to. Plus, promo copies of Imaginos were not available. CBS did not promote this album much at all to the general public, either. So it seemed they were ready to close the book on BOC.
My town didn't have a record store, so I motorcycled out to the mall in Savannah and bought a casette copy (no CDs or LPs were in stock). I had been disappointed by most of BOC's recent output prior to this and was hoping for a comeback. I was not disappointed this time!
Imaginos combines the dark mystique of Blue Oyster Cult's early albums with the production values of their late 70s chart-toppers. Sandy Pearlman's influence is very evident throughout as well.
Musically, the songs are top-notch, with a dark operatic approach to many of the entries. Sometimes the songs take too long to come to an end, but that's a minor quibble. A lot of the piano work echoes Alan Lanier's spidery playing on "Nosferatu", which fits the mood perfectly. Whoever is drumming does a rock-hard solid performance. Nice, pounding guitar riffs in many places as well. However some of the solos, while technically proficient, lack some of Buck's eclectic approach.
Vocally, the album is very much like "Agents of Fortune", with Eric, Buck, and even Albert handling the singing duties. Bouchard was never a great singer, but his quirky vocals are a vital part of the band's personality. The only shortfalls on this do come from a vocal end. On "Frankenstein" and the title track, vocals were done by session musicians. Their singing isn't bad, it's just too different from what is expected from a BOC album. Also, during the breakdown of "Blue Oyster Cult", Albert recites poetry and his voice is so heavily processed and echoed it's almost asymmetrical with the music.
It's also on this album that a definite lyrical connection is made with H.P. Lovecraft, which is perfect for the album concept. The liner notes contain a convoluted back story which is interesting and sets the tone for the concept nicely.
For Cult fans, this is a must-have.
