Music Review: A band of prodigies

In a word, this album is amazing. I became familiar with Blue October when I took a chance on "Foiled" after hearing "Hate Me" a thousand times on the radio. Despite its ubiquitous (read: overplayed) radio success, I still hadn't tired of it. The rest of the album, thankfully, lived up to my expectations and then exceeded them. So... I decided to work my way through the rest of Blue October's discography.
"History For Sale" is just as original and diverse as "Foiled" is. These guys are truly amazing in that they cannot possibly be labeled as just one genre. There's traces of "standard" alternative rock here, but also an abundance of acoustic rock, industrial, metal, and maybe even prog. In fact, "History For Sale" might be even more diverse than "Foiled." It truly is a musical journey, beginning with the chilling intensity of "Ugly Side," continuing with the ferocity of "Razorblade" and "Somebody," and the serene beauty of "3 Weeks, She Sleeps" and the gorgeous closing track "Amazing."
The lyrics, as we've come to expect from Justin Ferstenfeld, are absolutely haunting. They are incredibly personal, sometimes unnervingly so, but don't seem to beg for pity. It's almost as though he writes these songs as some sort of therapy for himself - meaning that there isn't any filler to be found here. Every single song has a purpose and a message. Whether he's raging against modern musicians' loss of integrity, lambasting a sexual predator, or mourning for a lost relationship, he always has something to say. These words, like the music, are beautiful, chilling, and memorable.
I can't praise this band enough. "History For Sale" is proof positive that Blue October is one of the very best bands on the planet. They are incredibly talented musicians and wordsmiths, and deserve more attention that they typically get. If you've heard "Hate Me" on the radio and are curious about the band, "History For Sale" is a great place to start, and well worth the price of admission. You'll be listening to this album years from now.
