Music Review: Not Hendrix, not Cream, this was the 1st Real metal.

I still have my vinyl copy of this album. It was a real eye opener in 1968 (maybe that should be "ear" opener). Blue Cheer was crude, rude and always on the verge of collapsing or blowing up under their own volume. This album is like an aural wrecking ball. It was total destruction on vinyl in 1968.
I don't remember ever thinking of them in comparison to Hendrix or Cream. Cream was a blues band that occasionally drifted into psychodelic stuff and Hendrix was similar in his approach. They were great players who created their own unique brand. Blue Cheer was working another angle: the most volume and distortion possible. These were not great players exploring new scales, guitar tones or intricate arrangements. This was balls to the wall noise. Their distortion was not based on "fuzz" box type distortion pedals, it was produced by massive volume. The amps sound like they are about to explode.
I have always thought of them as the first real heavy metal band. Their only hit was "Summertime Blues" and that's probably because it's the closest thing to "radio friendly" that is on this album. It's hard to believe any record company even released this in 1968 but I'm sure glad they did.
