Music Review: Bloody Hideous Andrew Jackson

Based largely on Ben Brantley's positive review in the NY Times, I went to see BBAJ on Oct.7, 2010 in previews at the Bernard Jacobs Theater. I wanted to like it. Instead, I ended up hating it. To understate, it was a major disappointment. Brantley, it seems, must have had an operation to have his taste removed. I found few redeeming qualities in this production. It runs 90 minutes with no intermission. Good thing. It was a long, long 90 minutes and I would not have returned for Act 2 if the easy escape route provided by intermission had been available. Why? First. the music. Simply stated: to my ear, it was dreadful. Just dreadful. Mostly, it was loud, blaring, headache-inducing emo rock. Secondly, the lyrics. They were simplistic and childish. Not unlike something that you might get from a bright but angry and somewhat lazy high school student. Third, the book. Vulgar, crude and often just plain silly. This production must have set a new record for use of the word "mother*****r" on Broadway. Fourth, it was unfunny. The jokes were as puerile as the lyrics. Worse maybe. About as sophisticated as a finger up a nose or "a four-and-a-half ...." --- oh, never mind. Finally, it seemed to strain to be politically incorrect. Doing a little bashing of Native Americans was apparently deemed to be acceptable. What other ethnic/racial group, I wonder, could be played with impunity by white actors in such a manner? BBAJ has been described as being "very different." But the concept of portraying historical characters in a modern setting is not all that innovative. I recall a movie version of 'Romeo and Juliet' not too long ago that was set in modern day Los Angeles. I disliked that one too. To be fair, there are maybe a couple of smiles available in BBAJ but truly not much more than that. And if your interest is history, you might, at least to some degree, excuse the shortcomings, excesses and some of the debatable conclusions of this production. And the relatively blameless cast deserves some credit for being energetic and professional. But this is, in my opinion, the kind of production that belongs off-Broadway. It would probably attract and maintain an audience there. But on Broadway? ... with that music? ... with that dialogue? ... at those prices? Unlikely. So, just this one time only, taking license from the language of the production, my final opinion of BBAJ is "Mother******g hideous."
