Music reviews of Eat to the Beat

Music Review: One of the greatest albums of all time...
Rating: 5 Stars

As a child I used to own this title on vinyl and remembered liking many of the songs on it. In those days I didn't rank albums according to greatness...hadn't listened to enough stuff to do that anyway. Having recently bought this title on cd (with 4 bonus tracks), I must say it strikes me as an all time great album. Never heard "Parallel lines" but reading the track listing for it never really made me think that that album was something I should get. It's good to say that nostalgia hasn't sent me astray in this case. There are no dud songs on this album. There are loads of terrific songs too boot. The rest are nothing less than interesting. Lead singer Deborah Harry is in fine form here...her voice going from charming lullabies, to screeching banshee songs. An accomplished album which is clever at times. This is the best of Blondie.

The all time classic song "//":

Atomic - has an all time great bass guitar solo and some tremendous, thwacking drums. Deb's singing is great here too.

The terrific songs "/":

Union city blue - nice drums, lovely soaring vocals by Deb - glassy at times...the way she holds those notes is a delight.

Dreaming - the opening track of the album. Has a bright/harsh sound which is indicative of the album. Not sure if the sound could be better overall. My cd was a 2001 issue. Anyway, Debbie's vocal melodic hooks really lift this song...she has two main such hooks in this song.

The hardest part - an Easter egg kind of song. Very funky vocals from Deb...a bit of reggae to it, perhaps. A narrative song with some keyboard on it. The track is bassy too...bass fairly skips along here.

Sound-a-sleep - bumped this song up in my estimation after two listens...initially gave it a dot in my scoring code but turned that into a small tick on 2nd listen. A lovely, gentle lullaby song. Triangle features, I think. Drum is almost like a heartbeat. Hearing Deb's first line brought this song back to me, all these years later.

Next best ".":

Eat to the beat - a high energy song. Once the catchy vocal part hit me, the memory of this song came back to me. Maybe there's an element of nostalgia here, but how often does nostalgia not hold up? Has harmonica and some bass lines at times.

Seven rooms of gloom (live) - one of four bonus tracks. Never heard this song before. Bumped it up in my convoluted code from "(.)" to "."...which has gotta be saying something, right? Again, this song has some funky elements to it...you could say that those funky parts have a Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe to them.

Die young, stay pretty - actually this is a "(.) song...notable for the drums. Has a reggae vibe to it. Nice vocal hooks with a good turn of phrase from Deb ("dried up twig on your family tree")...you just want to hug Deb and maybe cry a bit for her cynicism! The drum tone is tinny, but I like it in this case. There is a bonus, live version of this song too...in that Deb goes to town with her Caribbean impression. Drums have a different texture to them too, and the bass guitar sounds phat at times.

Then "[.]":

Accidents never happen - a mid-tempo song. Deb in creepy mode here, I think. Has synthesiser. Bassy. Guitars at the start have a sort of "Candy" vibe to them...the Lou Reed song (I think...hmm). Might be the only song featuring the word "pre-cognition". Kudos right there!

Slow motion - actually marked this as ">[.]"...which is slightly below the last song. A song inspired by The Supremes...it gives that 1960s black girl group a nod and a wink. Has backing singing here too...not sure if that Debbie doubling up or guest female singers.

The rest:

Shayla - contemplative guitar sounds. A slow tempo song. Has a vaguely Hawaiian vibe, perhaps. Languid and dreamy in any case.

Victor - this song really wakes you up after Deb's lullaby "Sound-a-sleep"! This song strikes me as being clever...it gives knowing nods to other music without sounding derivative. Has a Queen-ish vibe to it at times, as far as the guitars go. A little bit of the guitar riff reminds me of The Easybeats' classic "Sorry". Lyrics are occasionally primal therapy in nature...these parts are amusing. One melody here is familiar, but I can't place it.

Living in the real world - a high energy rock song. There is a vinyl scratch type sound at 1:47 ish in this song. Not sure if that is a flaw or intended. This song is a bit punk, as far as the guitar and vocals go. Made a note of "bomb", but I forget what I had in mind here.

The other bonus tracks:

Heroes (live) - a cover of the David Bowie song. I was hoping Deb would go banshee on this song, but she is quite respectful of the original...perhaps too much? Oddly, listening to this I kept thinking that were people outside talking or something when listening to it on my headphones. It's actually the backing vocals...very feint early on. You do hear some static clicks on the right hand side.

Ring of fire - a cover of the all time great Johnny Cash country song. Retains some of those country music elements, but it's a rock song.

Recommendations:

Ramones - End of the century. Their most polished and accessible album. Some terrific pop-punk here.
