Music reviews of BlondieMusic Review: Explosive and Stunning debut albumBlondie took the world by storm in 1976, rising from CBGB's NYC underground, releasing their explosive self-titled debut. Blending the fun, sweet, innocent pop melodies of the 50's and 60's with an emerging new, punk attitude and sound, Blondie pioneered the beginnings of new wave and punk rock. Their early sound employed a simple, yet incredibly effective musical approach, that incorporated various elements of disco, reggae, pop, punk, and new wave. The whole album is consistently excellent, without any weak moments. Shifting in tones from ironic, serious, sexy, and fun, they always manage to stay interesting without coming across pretentious. While Blondie was widely accepted with positive acclaim, few knew that this band was just getting started. However, there are moments on the album that hint at the greatness this band would go on to demonstrate. Much of the album's success relies on their straightforward approach and dynamic flexibility that takes you by surprise. At the forefront of the group was lead singer Debbie Harry, whose dominating vocal presence and energy dominated the image and sound of the group. The sixties influence is clearly evident on songs like first single of the album "X Offender" and "In The Flesh". "Look Good In Blue" is a slick, bouncy, keyboard driven track with catchy, however sarcastic, lyrics. "In the Sun" is a fun, sun soaked tribute to the surf revolution that best epitomizes their pop sensibility. "A Shark in Jet's Clothing" puts a fun spin on the NYC classic West Side Story, "Man Overboard" is possibly the best example of their early sound- perfectly capturing fun with electrifying keyboards and explosive drumming, guitars, and compelling singing. "Rip Her to Shreds" pulsates with attitude and flair. "Rifle Range" fires with more machine gun drumming and Harry spits lyrical firepower of her own. Blondie almost outdid themselves on this album, going for broke and creating a stunning debut masterpiece.
