Music reviews of Take Off Your Pants & Jacket (Dig)

Music Review: Words can't really describe how perfect this album is...
Rating: 5 Stars

Word for word, this album is absolutely BRILLIANT. Not only does it match most of the hype, it at times surpasses it. It's NOT a remake of Enema - it's more like a remake of Dude Ranch, with Enema's production and pop smarts thrown in to make for one incredible album. Tom and Mark's songwriting has reached its zenith - these are easily the best lyrics they've ever done. A LOT of time went into this album, and you can tell. To their credit, the album IS faster and harder than Enema Of The State, and that's a fact. Is it really as hard or as rough around the edges as Dude Ranch and Cheshire Cat? No. But can you hold that against them? Production skills and tools are DOZENS of times better than those that were used on the aforementioned albums. There are a few slower songs, but who the hell cares? The ones that are slow are amazing. blink-182 tried to please all of their fans with this one. There's an even mix of pop-punk tracks, full-fledged PUNK songs, slower ballads, and radio-friendly pop songs. But it's such a beautiful mix, you won't mind that much. As a whole, though, the guitar is raunchier, the riffs are technically more diverse and thoughtful than in Enema. Mark's bass riffs are also more prominent in TOYPAJ, and Travis's drums at times meet the insane speed and chops of their live album. Now on to the songs. 1.) Anthem Part Two - 10/10 - My God, what an amazing song to start off an album. I had EXTREMELY high expectations for this song - "Anthem" was EASILY the best song off of Enema Of The State, and one of their best songs ever. So when I listened to this, I was blown away. It's a typical pop-punk track, but it's filled with Tom's powerful vocals, crashing, raunchy guitar riffs, and some AWESOME lyrics. And such a great feeling! IMHO, not only does it live up to "Anthem"'s greatness, it surpasses it. This is unquestionably the best song on the album, and probably the best song they've ever done. 2.) Online Songs - 9/10 - This song is freakin' sweet... a punk rock song with great lyrics! The main riff is EXTREMELY reminiscent of Dude Ranch's "Boring" - but that's a very good thing! It's very cool, fast, and sounds great. One of the best songs. 3.) First Date - 9/10 - This song starts out with a sick drum fill, and rockets into a song filled with cool riffs, emo-ish lyrics, and powerful vocals from Tom. A typical young 16-year-old-male-kid's anthem, and a great song. 4.) Happy Holidays, You Bastard - 9/10 - EASILY the best joke song blink's ever done. Filled with hilarious lyrics, INSANE drum chops courtesy of Travis... and have you heard it live? Damn! 5.) Story Of A Lonely Guy - 8/10 - A slower, rock-ish song... but it's awesome! The lyrics are the strongest point - it deals with your typical loser of a guy who has no luck with girls. The dude actually sounds suicidal in some parts, and it's really touching. This song is quite similar to "Adam's Song" in a way. 6.) The Rock Show - 8/10 - blink's first (and current) single off of TOYPAJ. It's your typical pop-punk track and the perfect type of song that MTV's vapid little TRL audience will eat up. It's still a cool song, and reminiscient of "What's My Age Again?" in more than a few ways. Very catchy, and the video is hilarious, BTW. 7.) Stay Together For The Kids - 10/10 - This is the "Adam's Song" of TOYPAJ. When you hear the cool opening riff, that's the song that will definitely come to mind. It's probably the slowest song blink's ever done - but the lyrics are absolutely brilliant, and it's also without a doubt the HEAVIEST song they've ever done. It's very hard rock-like and very cool. 8.) Roller Coaster - 9/10 - This is Mark's anthem for TOYPAJ. It's about his marriage to Skye Everly and how he's afraid his happiness will fade in time. Great poppish song, and perfect radio material. 9.) Reckless Abandon - 9/10 - This song deceptively starts out with a low, AM radio-like bit of vocals from Tom... then busts into a huge guitar riff and a GREAT song. I really like the riffs in this song, and the lyrics are blink-182 to the core. Nice harmonies from Tom and Mark in the chorus too. 10.) Everytime I Look For You - 10/10 - A cool fast song with great vocal interplay between Mark and Tom. Nice lyrics too. This song is also on the "American Pie 2" soundtrack. The stripped processing in this song is also quite noticeable - you can actually hear them breathing, and the sound of their picks hitting the strings. A GREAT song. 11.) Give Me One Good Reason - 10/10 - This is my ... anthem. When I read the lyrics, I just laughed out loud... because you know deep down, that's what your parents think of the whole generation of us punk rockers. This song is blink-182's middle finger towards the older generations, the anti-punk rockers, the metalheads, the trendies, the teenyboppers, and conformists, and I couldn't ask for more. One of the best songs (I really like the interlude riff!). 12.) Shut Up - 10/10 - blink writes an extremely heavy song, with very cuss-filled lyrics, a [great] interlude riff, and some excellent lyrics about not putting up with people's bull-sh*t. It's really not a song that you'd expect blink-182 to do. 13.) Please Take Me Home - 10/10 - The final track of TOYPAJ - and what a way to end an album! This was the first song off of TOYPAJ that I ever heard, way back in December '00 when they premiered it live at the San Diego New Year's Eve Party. I loved it then, and I freakin' LOVE it now. It's definitely got that "popular single" vibe. It rocks hard, it's got some VERY cool riffs, great feeling, and cool lyrics. I LOVE THIS SONG! I'm not going to review the hidden songs - I don't want to spoil them for anyone. Out of the three regular bonus songs, "Time To Break Up" has arguably the craziest drumming Travis has ever done. It needs to be heard to believed. "What Went Wrong?" is an acoustic number that you'd never expect from blink. The three joke songs are hilarious, as well. You need to listen to the rest to hear about them. Although I still think Dude Ranch was blink's overall best work, TOYPAJ is tied for first or at least a VERY close second. There's just so much in this album and so many boundaries were pushed by a band labelled as a pop act with guitars. Well, for those that thought that, UP YOURS! This album is perfect. Buy it, and be enlightened.

Description of Take Off Your Pants & Jacket (Dig)

BLINK 182 TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS AND JACKET
Their formula is simple enough--equal parts teenage humor and brattiness combined with infectious guitar hooks that just beg to be cranked up on the stereo. But with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, the guys in Blink 182 may have delivered their best album to date, a punk-pop fusion that's so consistent you'll wonder which of the 13 tracks will become radio hits (any has the chance, really). Yes, as with Dude Ranch and Enema of the State, the songs here revolve around falling in love ("The Rock Show," "First Date"), falling out of love ("Online Songs," "Happy Holidays, You Bastard"), and plenty of other ways to kill time while away from school ("Reckless Abandon"). And yes, these guitar-driven songs all pretty much sound the same, but Take Off never gets boring. There's too much nervous energy here, too many slight variations in the arrangements, and too many hilarious lyrics that you won't want to miss. Parents may remember that the Buzzcocks used this same shtick in the late '70s, older siblings may remember that Green Day did it well not so many years ago, but Blink fans know that their band is more clever than anyone else playing today. The bonus tracks are throwaways, but that's OK--the threesome have given us plenty to bop our heads to here. --Jason Verlinde
