Music reviews of Enema Of The State

Music Review: Blink 182 - Enema Of The State
Rating: 5 Stars

I had not been interested in punk or Blink 182 before I listened to this. It changed one taste of my music dramatically. I heard "All The Small Things" on the radio and instantly thought that i had to hear more. Even though I don't think it is there best song on the album, it is still a cracker.

"Dumpweed" couldn't have been a better track to start off an album with. This being the first song you listen to gave a very strong and powerful sense to the album, which is what i want in a new cd, but not too strong which it wasn't.

I like Blink 182 and Enema Of The State because it is not heavy and not light but just right. Being too heavy can just ruin it, I think and turn it in to New Metal, which I can't stand, but hey that's just my view.

"Don't Leave Me" is another strong track and another favourite of mine. This keeps the tempo of the album up high. "Aliens Exist" also continues this but not so much, which is good to hear. Everyone who doesn't like punk or Blink 182 might well say that all there songs are just the same but to me they are totally different and are all masterpieces, which you can listen to over and over again. The tempo of the tracks changes throughout, and the use of a wide variety of drum beats and guitar structures changes for each unique track.

"Going Away To College" really does bring out great memories of childhood at school/college, just makes you think about it when listening to the line structures and the words themselves. I have noticed when listening that "Going Away To College" and most of the other tracks seem to have a very tasty instrumental intermission type thing in each track which is a really nice effect i think. Its not a heavy intermission but a quieter break from the rest of the track. I do like a good calmish instrumental from time to time and this album knows where to put them.

This puts me nicely on to "What's My Age Again?" Which is a favourite of mine not just for Enema Of The State but Blink 182. It's just so catchy; you want to sing along to it. I also think that it is a much calmer song of the album, which is what i like because i don't want them all to be heavy or all calm but a variety of each. Travis' great rim beat after about one minute in to the track is top stuff and matches a great guitar piece to go with it. The guitar piece is not really blurry like other times but clear and tuneful, you can notice each chord played.

"Dysentery Gary" is a bit heavier but worth the wait. It keeps you on your toes all the way through, having quite a nice pace to it and another catchy tune. It keeps you going as it only has 20 seconds of quieter theming. Pity its only 2:45 though.

Now on to my best song of the album - "Adam's Song". You might say that you haven't bought a punk album to have the pace and volume brought right down to have some dull punk track but that is the beauty. After hearing this track over and over again it made me want to be a drummer and buy a kit. I know that it is a simple beat but it is very catchy and dominating most parts of the track. The guitar pieces are very clear again and probably very simple to play but the tune stays with you.

"The Party Song" is another pacy track to get you going again. It is a great "before you go out" track to get you ready for a good time. It gets you going and makes you want to learn the lines because they are being said rather quickly at times. The vocals are just of a typical party that you and me might go to.

A big intro leads you into another classic "Mutt". This track combines both fast, slow, strong and weak, all in just 3:23. Having had this played on "American Pie" it is aimed at the right college audiences.

Bringing me towards the end of the album "Wendy Clear" is very muggy and compressed throughout most of the track with an overplay of strong and deep guitar play.

"Anthem" is a great ending to the superb album. The first thirty seconds just sound like something is coming to an end, in this case the album. It is a very nice pacey end to the album. At about 1:36 it really kicks in to becoming the last final track, and what an ending indeed. At about 2:23 it goes quiet which is a great touch to the speedy and strong finale.

So what can i say, i just loved and still love this album and Blink 182.

Even though each track is only 2-4 minutes long, thats what makes them special and well worth it.

Even though the compositions may not be that complex they perform then stunningly.

Description of Enema Of The State

Musically, vocalist/bassist Mark Hoppus, guitarist Tom Delonge and drummer Travis Barker still play the band's trademark pogo-tastic melodies, crunchy three-cord guitar riffs and power-pop choruses. But despite the seemingly casual and throwaway nature of the songs, the band has somehow managed to create a record that will make you feel happy and glad to be alive on a planet that's full of misery and depressive thoughts.
Blink-182's song themes all tend to revolve around the subject of disastrous relationships, lost loves and bad break-ups. But it's all handled in such a humorous and tongue-in-cheek style that you really find yourself smiling instead of feeling sorry for them. For example, observe the following verse from the track 'Don't Leave Me': 'I said; ''Don't let your future be destroyed by my past''/ She said; ''Don't let my door hit your ass''. See what I mean? Other songs like their current modern rock hit 'What's My Age Again?' see the band exploring a love for prank calls and other teenage delinquencies, even at their much older ages. The verse; ''Nobody likes it when you're 23/ And you still act like you're in freshman year'' is certain to go down well with millions of young adults who probably feel alienated for still doing the things that they loved to do when they were in their teens - like reading Spiderman comics and collecting Star Wars toys.
But more than anything else, one gets the strong impression that Blink-182 wishes for the triumph of nerds and geeks everywhere over the so-called 'cool' and 'popular' people of the world. It's almost as though they feel tired of the hip and trendy ones always getting the girls and other breaks in life; while the just-average types are largely ignored because they are not as immediately charming or arrestingly good looking. And yet; by wearing their hearts on their sleeves with their revealing lyrics and sincere storytelling style; the band has managed to endear itself to thousands of new fans. As proof; 'Enema of the State' has already been certified gold in America, with sales increasing every week. Thus, it's safe to say that the band members have in their own way, and by their own means; become extremely cool and popular - and have managed to enter the circle of 'in' people after all; whether they actually wanted to or not.
On their 1997 release, Dude Ranch, juvenile hardcore-pop band Blink 182 tickled the funny bone with an assortment of dumb sex jokes, off-color artwork, and between-song skits, including one of a dog drinking from a freshly peed in toilet. So, two years down the road, have the band matured at all? One look at the cover of Enema of the State, which features cover art of a tarted-up blonde nurse donning a rubber glove, provides the easy answer. Fortunately, Enema supports the humor with strong musicianship. The songs are more dynamic and multitempoed than those on Dude Ranch, sounding like a cross between the Descendents and Fountains of Wayne. And unlike the glut of alt-rock releases that offer one or two memorable songs, Enema is flush with instantly memorable melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies. Good, dirty fun--no more, no less. --Jon Wiederhorn
