Music reviews of My War

Music Review: 4.5 stars actually - The best Black Flag album ever
Rating: 5 Stars

This will dissappoint some of you, but this album leaves Damaged and First Four Years in the dust. Now I love Damaged, still probably the most physically menacing album ever, and I think First Four Years is pretty good but not great. This thing however just smokes them right from the start.

The first 6 songs are awesome. Oddly enough, ALL of them are memorable to me, which means it must be good. Rollins is seriously just wailing like a crazed beast here. You thought Iggy Pop was insane on Raw Power? Heh. However, this album wouldn't exist without Iggy. The title track is great. Can't Decide is really great. Beat My Head Against The Wall is incredible because of the tempo changes. It goes from Sabbath-style sludge riff to furious jamming and in a split second back to a sludge riff. You can't headbang to this song! It's a really great track. I believe this also has Greg Ginn doing an INSANE solo, he sounds like Eddie Van Halen, except REALLY pissed. I Love You might be the downer of the album NOT BECAUSE OF THE SONG, but because of the lyrics and title. It sounds wimpy. Which is the exact polar opposite of this album. It's not exactly the song you'd throw up the \m/ devil horns, sing the chorus and headbang to, because the chorus is I Love You. Forever Time starts out great. Swinging Man is very noisy and kind of experimental...still incredible.

Enter the last 3 tracks - songs that are COMPLETELY out of place in the whole hardcore scene, yet also completely genius. Slow, sludge rock yet still punk. It's pretty obvious that The Melvins' Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover listened to this album a lot, especially the last 3 tracks. Nothing Left Inside rules. The intro suggest something is very different here. There's a lot of instrumental jamming here, which is something that sounds great from Black Flag because they don't do it often. Also, Greg Ginn loses control on the solo here, it is pretty jawdropping. He's never done anything like this pre-My War. It's apparent he was practicing a lot in that down time after Damaged. Three Nights is very heavy as well, much like Nothing Left Inside but different. At the end as the instruments fade out, you can hear Rollins doing some manic vocals and that squeaking in the background is him rocking back and forth on the couch. That is some squeaky springs. Proof that this guy really applied himself to the music. Scream is incredible as well, however the lyrics aren't so great. They're kind of immature. And somewhere, Rollins uses the phrase "big baby", which made me laugh even though he was serious. These last three songs get their sound from Ginn turning the tone dial on his guitar all the way down, creating a very muffled sound, so while these last 3 are playing it sounds like your speakers are inside a sleeping bag and you're trying to listen from outside.

One thing I must note about this album is it's overall sound, the production is poor. There are TONS of lows and hardly any highs. The overall sound is very bassy and has lots of low oomph but no screeching highs. This is partly because the band themselves have mentioned that the album was recorded in a studio that was floor to cieling in shag carpeting. The walls were covered. Also, as I mentioned, Greg Ginn has the tone dial on his guitar turned all the way down so the sound isn't very 'open'. A lot of the songs really come out sounding poorly, and many times you cannot hear Rollins' downright insane vocals, which is a bummer.

This album is just better than the other Black Flag albums. It's just...better. It has elements that prove very influential. The first 6 songs have some occasionally Rage Against The Machine moments (not the rap-style Rage, but the Rage that played very hard rock). Also, this album is #11 on Kurt Cobain's favorite album list (from his journals). It ranked higher than Nevermind the Bollocks, Daydream Nation, Superfuzz Bigmuff, Generic Flipper and Damaged. You can tell that these guys were very influential on the whole grunge scene, because of their sludgy mid-tempo and very noisy sound.

This is a great album. Get it NOW!
