Music reviews of Damaged

Music Review: Agressive punk rock which owes a debt to bands like AC/DC. 65/100
Rating: 3 Stars

Decided to get try this album out as I heard the song "Rise above" on indie radio over here, which I don't really listen to. Found that song catchy. The album itself I would describe as aggressive, hard rock, with the drums having a certain heavy metal tone and style to them (the kind of playing which can be likened to the sound of a basketball being dribbled rapidly). To me the sound quality seems excellent, but dampened, if that makes sense. E.g. the cymbals and vocals sound feint at times, and the lyrics are hard to make at times. Would guess that the master tapes are fine, but a remaster would address all the shortcomings of the sound on this cd. Some similar problems in other albums would be: "Never mind the bollocks" (a polished sound, but with middling levels) and "Ramones" (the guitars are really down in the mix..."Leave home" is a big leap forward in sound for them...the version with live bonus tracks from their debut album also improves the levels spectacularly). Did find Henry Rollins' vocal style odd here...he sings with a lisp, often, which brought to mine the style of Jello Biafra from The Dead Kennedys. Not sure if Jello actually speaks with a lisp, but I've heard Rollins' solo song "Liar" where he doesn't do this. Odd choice, in any case. Another aspect which I found interesting was the debt Black Flack owed to bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Queen...you can hear their influences on this album.

Best song:

Rise above - has a catchy chorus and riff, and has backing vocals. Has that dampened sound quality I was talking about. Good guitar solo.

The rest (in track order. Found the album consistent, but without really having any other 'notable' song on it):

Spray paint - 0:33 minute long song. Dampened sound with feint cymbals.

Six pack - good bassy intro. Interesting drum pattern and tone at the start. Features backing vocals. Guitar sounds heavy metal at times.

What I see - bass intro with a good tone to the drums. Lispy singing with depressive lyrics.

TV party - bassy intro. Brings to mind "Blister in the sun" for the guitar and vocal rhythm. Lispy singing again (not sure if Rollins is borrowing from Jello here...only have one album each from these guys). Backing vocals, handclaps. A tongue in cheek ode to tv.

Thirsty and miserable - buzzing guitar, interesting drum sound but it's feint, unfortunately. Has a hard sound with a driving rhythm.

Police story - the guitar sounds heavy metal at times. Like the lyric "They hate us. We hate them. We can't win".

Gimmie gimmie gimmie - interesting drum parts. A hard, grinding guitar rhythm. Not sure, but it sounds like Rollins sings at one time "Gimmie some whore".

Depression - the outro reminded me of AC/DC at times. Also has a hard, grinding guitar rhythm.

Room 13 - some guitar bits have a Black Sabbath/The Stooges vibe to them...doomy...like the bit where he sings "I need to belong".

Damaged II - at first I noticed the debt that this song owes to AC/DC...thought it had the riff from "Let there be rock". It does...that kicks in around 14 or so seconds into the song, for a bit. But just recently, revisiting this song, the first 14 seconds, roughly, owes a debt to Led Zeppelin's "Communication breakdown". This might be the first time I've heard one song reference so explicitly more than one other song. Anyway, parts of this song have a heavy metal feel to them.

No more - the bass guitar plucks at the start of this song are like the chiming bells in AC/DC's classic "Hell's bells". Some of the riffing also brings to mind AC/DC. I like the "no more" bits of this which remind me of Queen. Drums have that basketball tone/rhythm to them.

Padded cell - more hard rock.

Life of pain - the intro reminds me of the band Black Sabbath. Interesting lyrical/narrative style.

Damaged I - a bluesy rocker...slower tempo, heavy rock song. Rollins' amusing and effective 'demonic' screeches mirror Bon Scott's in AC/DC's classic song "Highway to Hell".
