Music reviews of Elephunk

Music Review: Awesome Album, But Buy It For The Singles
Rating: 5 Stars

This was the first BEP album I got. I haven't heard their work before "Elephunk", but now I want to own every album they made. The BEPs rock and are one of the best bands out there. Their new bandmember, Fergie, raised some controversy, but I think she's a perfect addition to the group. Her vocals are awesome, so I can't imagine the BEPs without her.

This album is somewhat innapropriate in parts, I must admit to those who are afraid that this is more innapropriate than most albums. No. The BEPs are actually one of the cleaner bands out there. Of course, there are a few suggestive things in here, but nothing to go crazy over. And don't hate the song "Let's Get Retarded" because of it's use of the word 'retarded'. The BEPs mean no harm; they are not referring to the mentally disabled. I think it is somewhat 'retarded' that people hate that song (and the BEPs) because of this. To the sticklers, skip to track 14.

You'll basically want to buy this album for the singles because the other tracks are generally not as good. There are tons of singles, though, so you'll like the album

1. Hands Up (3:37) B
Cool intro song. I like the chorus ("Get 'em up, Get 'em up..."). Not the best of songs, but a great party song.
2. Labor Day (It's A Holiday) (4:00) B+
Awesome party song! The ode to vacation is here and will make you dance. Caution: this song is infectious, so be careful if you start singing the chorus like Fergie.
3. Let's Get Retarded (3:35) A-
The original "Let's Get It Started". Would be a perfect party song if everyone wasn't so sensitive about the word 'retarded'. Again, that whole business is really 'retarded'.
4. Hey Mama (3:45) A-
More party songs. Everyone knows this! I wish they put the single version (the one heard on the radio) on this album, but whatever, this song rocks. Some people were upset when the BEPs went from singing about stopping war to clubbing, but deal with it!! This song is awesome, even if it isn't supposed to be inspirational.
5. Shut Up! (4:59) A
Fergie shines on this awesome single. That chorus is really catchy, and the verses are also pretty infectious. You will like this song.
6. Smells Like Funk (5:06) A-
That ultimate beat is the reason to this song. The lyrics are OK, but tune that out and just listen to that infectious beat 'n' bass combo. Doesn't smell like filler to me, though.
7. Latin Girls (6:20) B+
Long, but pretty good. That "Mira mira mira mira..." part at the beginning will hook you in the song. Pretty good stuff here, but it somewhat seems like filler.
8. Sexy (4:45) B
Jazzy BEPs! Very 'Sexy' song here, but again, somewhat like filler.
9. Fly Away (3:39) A-
Fergie shines again with her almost-solo song. That infectious chorus will keep this song on your repeat playlist. Again, Fergie proves her allegiance to the band with this great song.
10. The Boogie That Be (5:13) A
Again, another ultimately infectious beat that will hook you. That chorus is pretty good, too. 'Nuff said.
11. The Apl Song (2:56) A+
Nearly-flawless ode to Apl.de.ap's homeland, the Phillipines. This is his song, and it turns out to be one of the best on the album. That chorus will be repeating in your head forever. Not a single, but should be because this song is AWESOME.
12. Anxiety -featuring Papa Roach- (3:39) B+
Not very BEP-like, but a great song to listen to when your angry. That intro is innapropriate, though, so watch out if you don't want to hear any cursing. Of course, I don't care, but just noting. The fact that Papa Roach suprisingly appears on this song was really surprising to me. That chorus is great. Destructive, but great.
13. Where Is The Love? -featuring Justin Timberlake- (4:32) A+
Where is the transition? From a song about letting out anger to stopping war is not the best transition. Anyway, to the song...THIS IS THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM, actually one of the best songs ever. Inspirational, catchy, well-written, well-performed, the list goes on and on. Even though Justin Timberlake stars in it (and I do not like him AT ALL), this song is awesome. An instant classic. Just take one good listen and you'll realize how good this is. It's too bad though that the "one world" part was cut out of the single, because that part was just deep. LISTEN TO THE SONG. 'NUFF SAID.
14. Let's Get It Started (3:36) A-
The ultimate party song. I don't like how they had to change it, but they added some sound effects so I'm content.
15. Third Eye (3:44) B
Worst song on the album, actually. Not really bad, but just doesn't stand out for me. OK, I guess.

So that's "Elephunk"! The singles rock, but the other songs mostly just fall short (with the exception of "Smells Like Phunk", "Boogie That Be" and "The Apl Song"). Definitely buy this album, though, because it includes pure classics and tons of perfect party songs. And "Where Is the Love?".

Overall, this album gets an: A-.

Description of Elephunk

All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed.
Black Eyed Peas have at times been accused of sounding too Tribe for their own good, but this time out Will.i.am and crew have consciously expanded their horizons. Problem is, perhaps they've tried too hard. As the title suggests, Elephunk borrows from every single element of funk known to man and (with the exception of the one straight-out rock & roll track, "Anxiety") tries to cram them all into a semi-hip-hop format. While such willingness to experiment is admirable, in this case the attempt comes off as slightly desperate and too diffuse. Elephunk settles itself into a groove when BEP's newest member Fergie?s lush girlie vocals are allowed to dominate, as they do on the discofied "The Boogie That Be." --Rebecca Levine
