Music Review: Billy Talent Has Just That... Talent

Love love love this CD. Well... up until "River Below" and then I begin fading - but only slightly.
I first saw Billy Talent late one night on MTV (yes... I actually witnessed MTV playing not only a music video, but a ROCK video!) It was for "Try Honesty" and as soon as the guitar riff began I felt this was something I should keep listening too. Then I saw the singer, and when he opened his mouth to sing, I almost took a double take.
Such a high whiney voice! But it grew on me - quickly. This seems to be the same reaction of all my friends who hear Billy Talent. They are somewhat put off by his voice, but it grows on them.
Maybe the human ear is just good in it's ability to adapt to such voices, or maybe it's easy when you have such infectious music surrounding it. There are such catchy guitar riffs, such catchy lyrics, you can't help but get pulled in.
Every song has that power house type feeling, even when the songs slow down to a sort of marching beat. Perhaps its the perfect sounding crisp clean recording which makes you feel like they are playing for you personally. Maybe it's the increadible screaming from the vocalist.
The sound quality is amazing. This is one of the few CD's where I really step back at the quality of the sound (I do a lot of stepping back apparently). I love to listen to this CD on high quality speakers, because it just sounds SO good. There are hardly any filters or sound effects, hardly any distortion peddals. Just crisp clear audio.
The tracks after "River Below" don't drift away from the power house sound. But for me, the melodies are not infectious as the first half. I've listend to this CD time and time again, and I've only been able to find bits and pieces here and there from each of the last tracks.
Maybe it's me, but perhaps in the recording studio Billy Talent created the track listing from best to worse. (Though, the very last track "Voices Of Violence" I seem to like more and more every time I hear it. I can see it quickly becoming another favorate).
If you look online, say a P2P program, you can find lots of alternate versions of the songs. I'm not sure if they are off of older punk collection CD's or what, but it's interesting to hear the worse production quality and slight alterations of each track.
ANYWAYS... if you love infectious punk rock, I'd definately recomend this CD. Don't worry about my little attack on the last half of the CD. I'm sure it's just a personal thing.
