Music Review: Complexity of Strayhorn

Strayhorn was not a simple arranger or composer so to present his talent in a format that does him justice is not an easy task. The music chosen was broad based showing his depth but it was interspersed with cuts that showed his ability to accompany without over-riding other artists. For a newcomer to this talent, this is a good pick.

Description of Piano Passion

Features Strayhorn backed by bass & strings on some tunes, and by Ellington on others. Includes three very fine versions of "Tonk" written by Strayhorn and Ellington. Very rarely you will find a CD on which Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington's life-long co-arranger, is the key figure!
