Music Review: One'a the geniuses of our time, spiritual an' fulfilling...

I've owned this album for about a year now, an' after a recent personal tragedy two things that happened recently made me rediscover it. Jus' three days after attending the funeral of lil' homie who died tragically, one'a my closest friends' baby girl was born an' I was made the godfather. Then that same day I had sumpin' of'a reconciliation with my ex-fiancee (still jus' friends, but I'm'a work on that). I'd say that was a lovely day. My spirit was rejuvenated after a VERY rough week dealin' with death. 'Lovely Day' was playin' in my head for the rest'a that day an' into the next, an' I came to realize how special music really was to me (if I hadn't already). I grew up listenin' to Bill Withers. There's a truth an' honesty in his singin' that even as a pee wee I was able to spot. I LOVE every song on here equally: the breezy emotion of 'I Want to Spend the Night' an' 'Let Me Be the One You Need' to the soothing comfort of 'Hello Like Before' that holds up as one'a the best ballads of yearning ever recorded. Then there's the simple yet haunting 'Ain't No Sunshine', a bonafide classic. An' ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know, ah-know you agree wit' me on that, right? Ya better! 'Grandma's Hands' still stands as one'a those songs that forever brings back random memories'a my childhood fa' some reason, not necessarily 'cause I remember hearing it specifically, but 'cause I always think'a my yearly visits to my grandma's house an' the mood an' feel an' smell'a her house when I hear it. 'The Same Love that Made Me Laugh' is what I like 'ta call a "highway song", one'a 'dem thangs that gets you goin' when you about to embark 'ya'self on'a LONG road trip. Then there's of course the classic 'Lean on Me', arguably the most important song Mr. Withers ever wrote an' recorded, a timeless anthem of unselfishness an' reaching out to help your fellow man. But probably my favorite joint he ever did (an' thas' one TOUGH decision to make) is 'Harlem', a song wit' some multi-layered lyrics dedicated to none other THAN an' the people an' events of each an' every week, the build-up alone makes it worth it. An' 'ya can't forget the embittered trials of indecision in 'Use Me', which anyways whose ever felt taken advantage of should feel. Oh, DAMN! I might hafta change my personal favorite, 'cause 'Who is He (And What is He to You)?' was extracted right from the depths of my broken heart a year ago.
By the way I don't care what y'all say 'bout Mr. Withers' later stuff, he may'a changed his sound wit' the times, but the blunt honesty an' ear-catching realism is still there. My favorite of the later stuff is 'You Just Can't Smile It Away' an' the duet wit' Grover Washington, Jr. 'Just the Two of Us'. In fact, now that I think 'bout it, maybe 'You Just Can't Smile it Away' is my personal favorite. Although I don't know, I also can't get away from 'You Try to Find a Love' an' the quiet beauty of the dreamlike 'My Imagination'. Of course this all brings me back to my original statement of I LOVE EVERY SONG ON HERE EQUALLY. Let me put it this way: My soul used to bleed with pain until Mr. Withers came an' healed me. Okay, maybe thas' a lil' over-the-top. Nah, bump that, thas' the TRUTH.

Not to be mistaken with Bill Withers's Greatest Hits or even the 1994 best-of with which it shares its name, Lean on Me nevertheless shares much with those two earlier retrospectives--notably the likes of such '70s soul-pop gems as the title track, "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lovely Day," and "Use Me." Like the earlier Lean on Me, this remastered selection includes 18 tracks, 13 of which overlap with the '94 set. Withers's oeuvre is something less than expansive: he recorded 10 albums for Sussex and Columbia between 1971 and 1985, then gracefully exited the business with three top 10 hits to his credit. The singer's warm vocals and wise lyrics have held up splendidly through the years, making him a likely candidate for periodic rediscovery. This anthology stands as the title of choice for the next wave of soul fans Withers wins over. --Steven Stolder
