Music Review: Bill Hicks in his prime and with a good crowd

Dangerous is the first release from, and a great introduction to, the comedy of Bill Hicks. The routine is shorter and cleaner (but not that clean, mind you) than most of his performances available on CD. It is recorded over the course of two nights at Carolinas in New York City in 1990, two years after Bill quit drinking. Dangerous is not quite the "comedy of hate" that Bill eventually explores in later releases, but it's a good disc to ease your way into Bill's style. He's thoughtful and spends much of his time attempting to woo his audiences with alternating morality arguments and dirty jokes. And he's very effective. If you are careful, you can hear a lot of familiar jokes, punch lines, and progressions, which later comics have either stolen or adapted from Bill Hicks. He is simply one of the greatest comics on the twentieth century.
Description of Dangerous
America was robbed of one its great comic minds when Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994. Hicks was a sharpshooter who picked worthy targets and hit every one--whether gunning for sellout celebrities ("demons set loose on the earth to lower the standards"), hypocritical health nuts, or his own "goober dad." Hicks's 1990 debut is the sound of the comedian just warming up his loose cannon. He was as compassionate as he was vicious, asking for a little more logic and a lot less idiocy from this "retarded nation that we are." "Listen, read, calm down, relax, shut up," he urged fans--and suggested, without asking for a laugh, using defense money to feed and clothe the poor.
