Music reviews of Sleepers

Music Review: 7/10 is good but not quite enough to "Wake Up" the masses
Rating: 3 Stars

The intro certainly helps, but the fact is that most everybody will continue to sleep on Little Brother. One thing that's for sure is that fans of the group can no longer drool over Phonte without giving the under appreciated member of Little Brother his props. If the purpose of "Sleepers" is to prove that Big Pooh can hold his own, then mission accomplished. Not once on this entire album does Pooh show a lack of skills, not once does the listener loose interest with his voice, and his delivery matches the beat without fail every time. Anyone who thought Pooh was the weak link of Little Brother has been proven wrong.

Pooh shines throughout the album, but 9th Wonder just can't but help be amazing. Every track he produces is incredible and end up being the best ones on the album. "Strongest Man" sounds like a track from Murs3:16, and Pooh really takes advantage of the strong beat ("It's the world's GREATEST/ I know it put a dagger in your heart for your child to have to say this/ off hiatus, I'm back with the latest/ put me on your playlist/ they feeling me young/ Got the whole game sprung, live fingers and toes/ Everybody's all froze like her-on's in their nose/ addicts I suppose say my body gets lethal/ my pen's been compared to a hit of that diesel.") "Heart of the City" is a classic ominous 9th beat, and Pooh uses it nicely weaving in and out the happenings of the big city. "Every Block" is a complete Little Brother union track, featuring Phonte on the mic. It's amazingly short, and it almost seems Phonte steps back a little bit to let Pooh shine.
Beat wise, the album hits its pinnacle with 9th's back to back punches of "Scars" and "Between the Lines". Both are up tempo beats with just some sick sampling. While "Scars" gets some help from the talented Joe Scudda, Median really drags this song in the middle. For as many Little Brother/Justus League tracks he's been on I've never been able to see any lyrical skill at all by this cat and he absolutely doesn't have any flow or delevery. He just flat out sucks, I'm sure he's a long-time friend though, so we can look forward to more from him unfortunately. Otherwise this would have been the best track on the album, Joe Scudda plays off the beat nicely.
"Between the Lines" is a nice change of pace from the previous 5 out of 6 tracks that feature guests. 9th's beat has the usual infectious soul sample as well as some subtle bongo drums and a dancing flute. Pooh doesn't let 9th or the listener down either as he professes his hidden desires to a female. On the last of his production credits, 9th Wonder unites his partners MURS & Pooh for "Now" with some hilarious results ("Shatter leaving shards of the show biz animals/ that trained to look hard for these video channels/ So, they mean up their mug and their hard core strut/ when they're soft as that porn that they show on `UnCut'/ I wanted to f*** every single last one of ya'll up!/ but Big Pooh told me `chill' plus the label called me up/ and said that you would probably sue cause your crew is too timid/ plus it wouldn't be good for my back-packer image.")

Khrysis handles most of the other production on the album and he's really hit or miss. His best productions being the laid back "My Mind" and his 9th Wonder imitation on "The Fever".

The biggest and best surprise of the album is the Big Dho produced "The Jungle", which ends up being one of the best tracks. The smooth production sounds like something on the Foreign Exchange album and has Pooh sounding like Guru, telling three different stories of people caught up in the struggle.

It's really unfortunate that this album suffers from some unnecessary faults. First, you'll be lucky to find a track that's more than two verses long. Pooh easily shows us he can handle it, so why not let him loose a little bit more. In addition, the guests are way two many, Phonte, MURS, and Joe Scudda all bring solid contributions, but the rest should have been left off. This album is to push Pooh, not everyone in the Justus League crew. Khrysis really let's Pooh down a lot, killing some excellent lyrics and turning them into average tracks ("I Don't Care", "Just Friends" and "Live Life" come to mind). Again, not like they're bad... but the beats almost make you zone out and become uninterested, missing some great rhymes. But, more importantly would ANYONE mind if 9th just didn't produce the whole thing?? Maybe he's saving his best with Pooh til the next Little Brother album, but seriously MURS, Jean Grae and Buckshot get entire albums produced by 9th and he can't hook his own man up? This album is all too reminiscent of MURS 3:16 - excellent beats & lyrics all around by the main artist and 9th Wonder, but painfully short at 45 min.

Bottom line: Big Pooh literally wakes up the doubters and skeptics, but as an album, "Sleepers" has some disappointing faults. It's not Pooh's fault because he brings his best, yet you get the feeling that the executive producer could have done better to rep Pooh. Nevertheless, it's a solid album and great pick-up for everyone, especially for Little Brother fans.
