Music Review: great songs, poor recording, distorted sound

Most of Big Black's best songs are here; it's a terrific collection. If only it sounded better! The original EPs sound much better than this clipped, distorted disk. There's nothing inherently wrong with digital recording; these were just done very badly, perhaps deliberately so. With a portable digital recorder and a good turntable I was able to make much better recordings of these songs from the original disks. I have trouble believing that the world's best audio engineer, working in one of the best recording studios in the world, couldn't do better.
