Music Review: A Gem

This is an excellent collection from a very talented pianist. One of the more remarkable and exciting aspects of this collection is the transposition from instruments more indigenous instruments of China to the piano. Similar to the time period in which many of these compositions originated from (Republican China 1920-1940ish), this piece adds to a discussion about the difference from modernity and "Western" (does the Piano, an instrument originating in the West make all music "Western"?) These compositions also look to find its identity and place between different times. A China in transition from its Imperial past to a modern nation-state (and even today in the PRC, at one time this "bourgeois" music may not have been acceptable. The music speaks twofold: the audible sounds that you hear and the journey through time and space for it to arrive in this compact jewel case. This is a worthy collection by an excellent performer.
