Music Reviews of I Am...Sasha Fierce (Deluxe Edition)Music Review: This is the one to buy... Rating: 4 Stars
Unfortunately, the deluxe edition is only going to hurt Beyonce. The standard version of I AM...Sasha Fierce is, like Bday, too short and convoluted. It seems a bit incomplete. The deluxe version is much better with the addition of several songs that are by far superior than most of the songs that are from the standard album. For instance, Smash Into You, Ego, Hello and Scared of Lonely are infectious and melody laden unlike Diva and Video Phone which sound almost identical to Awwww Sh****t from Kelis' "Kelis Was Here." And none of the Sasha songs come remotely close to matching the greatness of Crazy in Love, Baby Boy, Naughty Girl, Deja Vu, Upgrade U, and Ring the Alarm. This paradox happened with Bday too which is a great album but it was too short and omitted amazing b-sides such as Lost Yo Mind, Back Up, Flaws and All, and World Wide Woman.
It's the 1st disc where Beyonce and her songwriters are at their best with gorgeous melodies and personal lyrics. The success of Irreplaceable was the best thing to happen to Beyonce as it showcased her vulnerability and mass appeal as an artist. It's unfortunate that most fans will not dish out the extra cash (as the record company is hoping they will) to buy the deluxe version as they will be missing out on some of Beyonce's most amazing songs to date.
Throwing away the idea of a 2 disc concept album, the songs compiled here would make without a doubt her best album thus far. Consider this track list:
1. If I Were A Boy
2. Single Ladies
3. Disappear
4. Radio
5. Satellites
6. Smash Into You
7. Halo
8. Ego
9. Sweet Dreams
10. Broken Hearted Girl
11. Hello
12. Scared of Lonely
13. Ave Maria
Omissions: That's Why You're Beautiful, Diva, Video Phone
Music Review: Identity Crisis Rating: 3 Stars
Now I realize that Beyonce's first album was a flook. You would think after Dangerously In Love she would be able to carry that kind of talent and creativity through to the next level of her career. I thought B'day was a dissapointment and now, Sasha Fierce trumps that with this travesty. I don't know what's going on with Beyonce. Her music has hit a wall and become souless, dull and ordinary. Where is the magic from her first album? Alot of her upbeat music follows that same formula with the fast talking and attitude from hell. The song "Diva" is unlistenable and annoying like most of the tracks on B'Day. When I was playing the cd in my car, my eyes were glazed over as I was driving, and music is NOT supposed to do that to you. the only high point was when I was blasting "Video Phone". The bass is always turned up in my car so the song had a cool effect by making my seat and my whole car vibrate. But then an old man next to me in his car heard the music blasting out my window and he screamed "turn that f-ing garbage down!!!" so it ruined the moment. The ballad cd was a skip-over parade. It's as if I couldn't wait to skip over to the next track as each new song started. the only song, I repeat THE ONLY song I liked off that disc was "Ave Maria", which is the best song on the whole deluxe edition. That's pretty sad, and ironically it's not a completely original song it's a borderline remake. The only other noteworthy song on the cd is "scared of lonely". And I still wonder how could this be? Beyonce tried to do this cross-over "coldplay" type music that just does not work for her. She should stick to r and b, real r and b. Beyonce needs to re- think what direction she wants to go artistically and work with all new writers and producers. Re-team with the Dangerously In Love crew!
Music Review: the cd is fierce Rating: 5 Stars
I'll say that at first her single "If I Were A Boy" i wasn't really feeling it but after a few more listens and watching the accompanying video. I have a new respect for the song and Beyonce as an artist. First its her first lead single without a featured single. Also it's a sparse song that lets her do her thing on the mic and she does it very well. Explaining to her man would it would be like if she did all the things that he does and doesn't even think about. How it affects their relationship as a whole.
The rest of "I Am..Sasha Fierce" lets Beyonce show the world what's really going on in her world as the first half of the cd. Is just that about what she's been through with lots of ballads and slow songs but they never wear the listener down or get boring. Her vocals are heartfelt, the lyrics are on point and the overall songs are well done and produced. As she uses a variety of songwriters and producers (but not without her own personal touch on every song) minus the first song. Also of not the Itunes version of the cd has an excellent addition with the song "Save The Hero" so check that out as well. You won't be disappointed.
The second half of the cd is her alter-ego, energy-filled and excellent uptempo dance ready songs that folks have come to know from Beyonce. She rocks each and every one of them..from "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) to "Diva" and "Radio". I'm sure that you will hear these playing at a club on the regular. While i loved "B'day" I'm more impressed with "I Am...Sasha Fierce" because "B" took a risk and made a complete album minus the featured artist craze that some artists do all too regularily.
The cd is sure to do very well for the rest of 2008 and well into 2009 without question. It's fierce...
Music Review: Comfort zone Rating: 4 Stars
Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):
1. If I Were A Boy: First rate song, and gets better after you've watched the excellent video. Starts slowly and works its way into your heart.
2. Halo: Best song on the album. Passed up by Leona Lewis, who would also have done a pretty good job. Heart-pounding soaring chorus.
3. Ave Maria: Simple interpretation and beautifully sung version
4. Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It): Yes, even after all those parodies on youtube.
5. Diva: Didn't like this at first listen, and still don't care that much for the lyrics, but the track has grown on me.
This is a 2 disc set, one disc of eight radio-friendly ballads, and one of eight R&B/Dance tracks. Other than the hits listed above, the first disc has "Disappear" which is a mainstream ballad, but didn't make the short list because she's a little shaky on the low notes. "Broken-Hearted Girl" is a good ballad, but not an immediate stand-out, even though it's much, much better than the average filler material. Nothing else is of the quality of (1.) (2.) or (3.) above.
On disc two, "Radio" isn't a bad dance track, sounding a little disco Donna Summer-ish. Same goes for "Sweet Dreams", a definite toe-tapper. "Video Phone" goes reggae and "Hello" is probably the weakest track on the album. Didn't care for "Ego" or "Scared of Lonely" either, but they're not THAT bad.
The most noticeable thing about this album is that Beyonce seems comfortable and confident with the songs, and you don't get the impression that she's straining or trying too hard. If you don't like this album on the first listen, try, try again - especially the tracks in the SASS above.
