Music reviews of I Am...Sasha Fierce

Music Review: Great Album...Insulting Marketing Strategy
Rating: 4 Stars

When the initial marketing plan for Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce was made public before the album's release in 2008, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was pleased that it seemed that she and her record label had listened to fans and learned their lesson regarding deluxe edition releases after B'Day was re-released and fans became enraged about having to purchase the album all over again to legally possess the new tracks. Sasha Fierce would be released in both a standard and a deluxe format, simultaneously, so I was glad that I felt reasonably sure that I would only have to purchase her album once to get all the tracks. On the other hand, I was irritated that Team Beyonce came up with such a weak marketing strategy for the release of the album. First of all, Sasha Fierce was spread out over 2 discs. While albums are typically put together as one body of work that takes the listener on a journey through various moods and representations of aspects of life, Team Beyonce decided that this album needed to put all the ballads on one disc and all the uptempo tracks on another disc. It must have seemed like a great idea to clearly distinguish between "Beyonce's deep side" and "Beyonce's danceable side," but it came off as insulting to the listeners. It was as if after all these years of listening to Beyonce as both a solo artist and a member of Destiny's Child, we were just incapable of understanding that she has both a tender and an aggressive side. The clear separation also seemed to backfire on Beyonce, as many who bought the album found it exhausting to listen to so many slow and mid-tempo songs in a row, and they also found it overkill to listen to so many uptempo songs in a row (though the second disc played a little bit better as almost an album by itself). On top of this, the standard edition of the album was ridiculous, with only 11 tracks being spread out between the 2 discs! Considering that the typical R&B album features at least 12 tracks, these days, it seemed laughable that Team Beyonce was trying to market I Am..Sasha Fierce as if it were a double album (like Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics album from 2 years earlier). The deluxe edition, on the other hand, featured 16 tracks. This meant that this edition felt closer to being a true double album, with 8 tracks on each disc, although still not quite there, yet. However, in order to get a full album's worth of tracks, fans would have to spend $4+ more than they typically spend on a full album. Very clever.

However, 10 months later (just as the album had nearly run its course), Team Beyonce did the unthinkable and went ahead and re-released it internationally as the PLATINUM edition of her album, adding 3 new tracks, the Kanye West remix of "Ego," and a bonus DVD of nearly all the music videos of the album's singles and a behind-the-scenes short documentary. 2 months after that, the album was re-released AGAIN in a new deluxe format, this time with all of the original deluxe edition tracks, but also with the remix of "Video Phone" featuring Lady Gaga and the brand new track, "Poison." Fans could download both the new tracks from the 2009 deluxe edition and one of the tracks from the platinum edition in the 3-track digital EP of bonus material that her record label released (as well as the remix of "Ego" in its separate digital release). However, they could not own "Save the Hero" or her cover of Billy Joel's song, "Honesty," unless they purchased the platinum edition (the exception being that those who downloaded the album on iTunes would get "Save the Hero" as an exclusive track). Furthermore, audiophiles (like myself) and/or people who simply want to own physical copies of their music had to purchase both the 2009 deluxe edition of the album and the platinum edition of the album if they wanted to legally own all the bonus tracks in high-quality format. This is absolutely ridiculous. While both the remixes were likely created well after the original release of the album, the other 4 bonus tracks could have easily been released as part of the original deluxe edition. Even better, all 6 of the new tracks could have been released as part of an EP (both digitally and on CD).

If one actually goes through the headache of purchasing all the bonus tracks (via whichever route they like), using the platinum edition album's track list (with some minimal splicing to avoid listening to both the original versions of "Video Phone" and "Ego" and their remixes, and to add "Poison" into the mix) makes the album flow very well, even if it is a bit lengthy. The mixture of styles throughout the revamped album should allow some listeners to appreciate the exquisite ballads like "Smash Into You" and "Satellites" more easily. When it comes down to it, Beyonce laid down a bewildering number of high-quality tracks during her recording sessions for her album. She set out to branch out in some unexpected stylistic directions, and those fans with eclectic tastes in music were certainly rewarded. It's just a shame that the album was marketed the way it was over the course of the first year it was out. I have to say that after the re-release of B'Day and the 4 different releases of I Am...Sasha Fierce, I will be hesitant to buy her next album until it has been out for a year. While I continue to appreciate Beyonce's dedication to high-quality pop music (and extremely well-executed performances), I don't want to buy another one of her albums, only to find out that I did not buy the finished version. It's time that record labels and artists realize the importance of staying committed to the fan base. Unnecessary release practices are driving some fans to download their music illegally, and that just hurts the music industry as a whole.

Description of I Am...Sasha Fierce

I AM...SASHA FIERCE DELUXE - Includes five #1 hits "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," "If I Were A Boy," "Halo," "Ego," and "Sweet Dreams." Also includes bonus tracks "Video Phone" featuring Lady GaGa and "Poison."
(Amazon.co.uk Review) The latest outing from former Destiny's Child starlet Beyoncé is an intentionally schizophrenic affair. Splitting herself into two separate characters--herself and alter ego Sasha Fierce--is the artist's way of presenting what she obviously sees as an artistic duality. The first set, I Am..., is intended give a glimpse beneath the surface of her usual R&B-pop persona. Featuring recent single ?If I Was a Boy", the soaring ?Halo", and ballads like ?Disappear", and ?Ave Maria", it seems her ?real" self is way more saccharine than the lady that brought us sassy pop moments like ?Crazy in Love" and ?Baby Boy". That side of her personality comes rushing back out on Sasha Fierce, a more rousing collection that kicks off with the infectious handclaps of ?Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", ventures into Euro-dance territory with ?Radio", and gets surprisingly risque with the voyeuristic ?Video Phone". Which part of the album you enjoy most will depend on your musical proclivities, but the new, bifurcated Beyoncé ensures there's enough diversity to satisfy the most demanding pop aficionado. --Danny McKenna
