Music reviews of Dangerously in Love

Music Review: Beyonce's hot, but her destiny seems blurred
Rating: 3 Stars

Beyonce Knowles' solo career always seemed like a sure thing. She was the center of attention in destiny's child and many times it seemed like the other members were just her back up singers. So, while it seemed strange to Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams strutting their lonely selves in videos, Beyonce's album is something that has been anticipated for a long time. However, while it seemed like a solo career was always planned, Beyonce sounds very uncomfortable and scared on this album. With some exceptions, the strong, sassy approach she brought to her singing on destiny's child records is gone and on most of this album she coos and moans sweetly. You would think this album would be a stepping stone, where Beyonce outgrew destiny's child and constructed her own individual style and image but for the most part Beyonce just sound lost. Also there are a few very strange things about this album that make you think maybe she really is the shy, sweet loving group member she tries to portray herself as. The album's title, dangerously in love, is the name of an old destiny's child, and inside the CD packet, there's a picture with Beyonce and two clones of herself, making all together three beyonces, a strange choice considering the amount of people in destiny's child. Another odd choice was to go by the name Beyonce instead of Beyonce Knowles, although that could be to cast her against other one named singers, like Ashanti, mya and Monica. The first half of the album is upbeat songs, and this is where Beyonce is at her best. Yet another thing this album should have had going for it was the involvement of rapper Jay Z, who has allegedly been seeing Ms. Knowles for over a year now, although neither will comment on their relationship. However, if they are romantically involved their chemistry doesn't translate to music, as jay's rap on the first single crazy in love sound tired and irrelevant. Jay has poked fun of destiny's child's songs before (on the remix to missy Elliot's one-minute man he chanted "get your independent ... outa here question?"), but he and Beyonce just can't mesh. You wonder if this liaison would be better in a destiny's child song, where the three girls could tease playfully and then leave Jay cold. However, the lack of chemistry is made up for by the driving beat, blazing horns and relentless sass of Beyonce. Her destiny's child divaness shines through here, but in a less confident way. She sounds like someone very strong but not strong enough to escape love. Next on the album is naughty girl, where Beyonce gets funky and lets her sexuality free in a way that she might not have been able to with destiny's child. She asserts cockily "we gonna turn this party out I know you want my body" right after cooing softly " If you can reach me you can feel my burning flame". The song doesn't have a great beat by Beyonce turns it into a funky explosion. The best song on this CD is baby boy featuring Sean Paul. On it, Beyonce slides over a beat that mixes the Indian sounding beats made popular by missy with the clapping of a Sean Paul reggae song. Beyonce moans and groans through the first verse, rides over her own Chinese sounding chants of "na na na" on the chorus and then lets the diva loose in the second verse, belting strongly "every time I close my eyes its like everyone left except you and me". Here Beyonce no longer plays the get them hot while keeping them on a short lease game of destiny's child. Here she lets her sexuality become the game chanting confidently to whistles in the background "picturing us dancing real close in a dark dark corner of a besetment party". She sounds like she's having fun on this song. Beyonce eventually outshines Paul, but his contribution should not be understated and his guest appearance in the best among many on this album. On hip hop star Beyonce taunts softly while throwing off confident lyrics ("my style is so crazy"). It's a great song and Beyonce rides the throbbing beat with true excellence and sexiness and she groans in the background and coos "undress me undress me come"). Be with you and me myself and eye sound like average r&b song worthy only of lesser divas, but Beyonce saves them with outstanding vocal performances. She turns I'd rather be with you, a piece of fluff with a soft, insignificant beat, into to a tour de force, cooing during the verses at the beginning and at the end belting with all her might. However, after me myself and I, there's nothing left of significance. Signs is one of missy's attempts at a soft, neo-soul song, but drags on without hitting a peak, and the silly hinting," I was in love with a Sagittarius", jay z is a Sagittarius. Sounds tame and boring after her groans earlier in the CD. Speechless thumps softly like an aaliyah song, but unlike aaliyah, Beyonce can't oversings and can't turn it into anything significant. The second song with Jay Z, that's how you like it sounds like a leap backwards. It sounds like that song Beyonce's younger sister solange and lil Romeo recorded, with a singsong beat and Beyonce and jay both sound bored. The closer I get to you, a duet with Luther vandross, makes it painfully obvious that Beyonce hasn't developed her own ballad style yet, as Luther slides slowly and soulfully across the beat and Beyonce loses herself by throbbing and moaning endlessly on every note. Dangerously in love pt 2 is completely worthless and sounds exactly like the first one with worse background vocals (this time its Beyonce instead of Michelle and Kelly) and a less intense vocal performance by Beyonce. Again you wonder why they would choose to remind you of her greatness with destiny's child. And of course the bonus track daddy manages to beat out the dc song "story of beauty" for creepy hints at incest. Beyonce coos "I want my lover to be like my daddy". Not only is it scary, but all the funk in bee's voice in the beginning of the album has completely evaporated. All in all, this albums features some soulful, funky jams, but all the sass fizzles at the end. Beyonce's still a diva not to be messed with and she easily beats out Monica and Ashanti on this album. However, with mya and Monica heating up fast, Beyonce will have to sustain her greatness throughout her albums and develop a more specific identity if she wants to stay on top.

Description of Dangerously in Love

International edition of the highly anticipated 2003 solo album debut from the Destiny's Child front woman includes the hidden bonus track, 'Daddy', which appears on the US version as well, plus two additional bonus cuts, 'Work It Out' (Top 10 solo single from 'Austin Powers In Goldmember') & '03' Bonnie & Clyde' (feat. Jay-Z). 17 tracks. Columbia.
The perfect timing of Beyonce Knowles? career moves continues with the release of her debut solo album. Dangerously in Love?s best music is wildly up-to-date, craftily designed for both maximum street acceptance and positioning as some of the most cutting-edge stuff on current radio. The brash first single, "Crazy in Love," melds Jay-Z with an unstoppable Chi-Lites horn sample, shape-shifting into something brand new. Collaborations with Outkast?s Big Boi and Sean Paul also prick up the ears, while changes of pace like "Be with You" and "Speechless" achieve their aim with credibility. The disc becomes far too ballad heavy in its second half, but the key stuff is the noise she brings. --Rickey Wright
