Music reviews of Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook

Music Review: Soulful Diva's "Interpretations" a mixed bag...
Rating: 4 Stars

Bettye LaVette has been around forever and a day without deserved acclaim until now! Back in the sixties noticed this great voice but Bettye only played on R&B stations caught this soul music lovers attention and have a number of old stunning 45 rpm's that are classic. Early eighties a great Motown Lp "Tell Me A Lie" ("Right In The Middle Of Falling In Love" should have been a smash!) was released and felt certain her time had come...no promotion & minimal airplay resulted in Bettye once again snubbed by the music industry and took years for Bettye to have chance come her way again so unfortunate "Interpertations" isn't perfection as it should have been.
Early nineties stellar release "Atlantic Sisters Of Soul" featured incredible Bettye LaVette riveting stand-out performance "Your Turn To Cry" from tremendous unreleased Atlantic Records Lp and believe this started the buzz leading to current success. Surrounded by terrific singers like Mary Wells, Esther Phillips, Dee Dee Warwick and other legendary soulful Divas, Bettye's soul-stirring anthem stands out big-time and what a memorable & hypnotic performance it is! Live sets and great releases lead to current collection which is a mixed bag that I really wanted to love but should have come out better and exceeded expectations but sounds like somebody got way too serious...up-tempo numbers and riveting power ballads with strong rhythm tracking are best suited to Bettye's rough & raw voice yet "Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook" has a number of slow songs with no rhythm track to carry vocals and these don't work and end up sounding the same...contrast this with riveting Hollywood Bowl "Beatle Tribute Concert" performance, Bettye took the evening by storm giving a show-stopping performance with a fine full orchestra receiving a well deserved standing ovation from an enraptured crowd...Bettye was stunning and on fire!
"Interpretations" does have its moments of greatness always found in a LeVette set and hot funky opener "The Word" is a promising start as Bettye makes this one her own while an amazing "It Don't Come Easy" is another definitive performance that is wildy hot & riveting..."No Time To Live" is richly engrossing but by now sadly it becomes apparent too many slow lumbering songs with Bettye sounding in too much pain drag things down showing Bettye LaVette is best with strong rhythm tracks and terrific when she funks it up and has some fun! Compare the riveting & passionate Joe Cocker "Maybe I'm Amazed" from "Heart and Soul" or the rocking Petula Clark version from "Warm And Tender" to this bogged-down version and these fiery definitive versions work and are inspired...both legends take Paul McCartney classic to the max and are essential & highly recommended for any music lover who love definitive performances. Remix would be awesome of all lumbering slow songs in this collection to have fired up rhythmic arrangements and "Maybe I'm Amazed" with a Joe Cocker like arrangement featuring Ms. LaVette would be a winner. Bettye is a tremendous legendary singer deserving a legendary equal like Gamble/Huff Dexter Wansel or Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis at the helm arranging & producing and results would be extraordinary. Closing "Interpretations" with beautifully orchestrated searing live performance "Love Reign O'er Me" show a live collection would be great for the next Bettye LaVette project but this time give Bettye the support she needs with a brilliantly arranged orchestra complete with a hot cooking rhythm section and inspired background singers...spice it up and have fun! Sometimes an artist can get too serious and results become stiff...sadly looks like that is what happened this time...loosen up & let it flow then next time could be that classic we are waiting for!

Description of Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook

Bettye LaVette brings the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook. Produced by Bettye, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, the album is a 13 song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, concluding right where the very idea for Interpretations started: Bettye s visceral rendition of The Who s Love Reign O er Me from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears here as a bonus track. That performance which first brought Bettye together with Stevens (the event s producer) and Mathes (its musical director) showcased for a national television audience what her devoted fanbase already knew: Bettye LaVette is without parallel as an interpreter of popular song. The success of this performance lead to another astonishing moment on the national stage, her duet of Sam Cooke s Change Is Gonna Come with Jon Bon Jovi at the Obama Inaugural Concert.

Now comes Bettye LaVette s first release since those extraordinary performances. Finding new excited fans at her shows, Bettye decided to explore more of the repertoire that had brought her all this attention. From the wistful naiveté of The Moody Blues Nights in White Satin, which Bettye matures into a deep and unshakeable lament, to the funky workout of Ringo Starr s It Don t Come Easy, Bettye inhabits these songs, revitalizes them and exposes the humanity that makes these 13 tracks not just pop songs, but enduring works of art.
