Music Review: Music to heal the soul...

I'm not sure what the reviewer from New Haven listened to... but, I don't think it was Betty Buckley, Stars and the Moon, Live at the Donmar. (btw-I believe that is the London skyline featured on the cd insert... why would the NY skyline be on a LONDON cd?) Anyway... on a happy note, Ms. Buckley has certainly outdone herself with this release. Performing with Betty on this recording... Jamey Haddad-percussion, Tony Marino-bass, and the masterful Kenny Werner-piano. This performance was recorded live, in London, at the Donmar Warehouse in the Fall of 2000. The concert starts out with Not A Day Goes By, which immediately goes into Just The Way You Look Tonight. Then comes the title track, Stars and the Moon. I still remember the first time I heard Betty sing this song live. Having this recording, brings back memories of that time. Next up, Finding Home (beautiful) and Answer Me My Love (a Joni Mitchell tune). Then my favorite... Migratory V/A Horse With Wings. This song was a favorite of mine before the events of September 11... but, it has taken on new meaning since then, at least for me. The poet's section is how Ms. Buckley refers to the next few songs, when in concert. Fire and Rain, by the American Poet, James Taylor. Then the ladies poet section... poet's medley/Red Dress/Souvenir/Will There Really Be A Morning. Another old favorite of mine is included too, Old Friend. Send in The Clowns is performed as I have never heard it before... with an awesome new arrangement by Betty's good friend/arranger/pianist Kenny Werner. (Kenny and Betty kick ... on this one!) A beautiflul instrumental, Close To Home follows. The recording comes to a close, appropriately-since Ms. Buckley frequently uses this as her encore, with Amazing Grace.Sure, there are a few songs on this CD that Betty has recorded before. However, if you've ever been to a Betty Buckley performance, you will know that Ms. B never performs a single song the same way twice. It's all in the moment...
Stars and the Moon, Live at the Donmar may have been recorded almost a year ago, but it certainly heals the soul at this moment in time.
