Music Review: BUY THIS ALBUM/ CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Donovan Leitch includes a hearty shout-out to his contemporary, Bert Jansch, with the tracks "Bert's Blues," and "House Of Jansch," (from the albums "Sunshine Superman," and "Mellow Yellow," respectively), as well as in his own autobiography "Hurdy Gurdy Man," at which point I had to see what all the fuss was about. Having started with Jansch's 1965 self-titled debut (prominently featured on the soundtrack of "The Squid And The Whale"), I was instantaneously rendered a fan. I wanted to get all the Jansch I could get my hands on. "Bert and John" was my next acquisition: This predominantly instrumental collaboration with fellow UK folkie, John Renbourn, features some exceptional guitar playing in their incredibly distinctive blues/folk/jazz style. Especially for the fact that this is almost exclusively instrumental, there is a striking timelessness to these recordings; there is a warmth and electricity about it's crisp mid-range, mid-sixties fidelity. Somewhat akin to the seminal jazz albums of the 1950s and 60s, there is an imperative to the playing and a tasteful, tuneful quality that will make you glad to have added this to your life's soundtrack. Don't let this one get away.
