Music Review: One of the greats

One thing I'll never understand are the people who either don't get this film or the music that Bernard Herrmann composed for it. Get this straight right now: Taxi Driver is one of the greatest, best, and most important films ever made in any country at any time and Bernard Herrmann is without a doubt one of the top three or four film composers of all time and probably the greatest. The music Herrmann wrote for Taxi Driver, as were all his film scores, is wholly unique and perfectly tailored for the film it was written for. Unlike most other film scorers, Herrmann did not apply the exact same orchestral score to his films, but rather chose specific instruments that captured something essential about the film or scene. In his score for Taxi Driver, Herrmann uses the saxophone as the central voice. Since the beginnings of Jazz and blues, sax has been an instrument that speaks of human lonliness. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, captures the mood, the feel, the very idea of lonliness better than a solitary saxaphone in the darkness and this score makes great use of this fact. Herrmann's Taxi Driver score veers deceptively from cheezy jazz, to deep blues, to ominous experimentalism. Second to the sax in Herrmann's score are the drums, which periodically either roll out an off-kilter military beat or disrupts the aural surroundings with the thud of a bass drum. Then, always, after the insanity, the generic jazziness comes back in, covering up the disturbing truth with a fairly innocuous veneer that by the end cannot contain the ugliness underneath. Bernard Herrmann was THINKING when he scored his films, and that, my friends, is what truly sets him apart from all other composers. His scores by themselves make better movies, in your head, anyway, that even some of the greatest filmmakers could perform with casts of thousands. Even the great Morricone is Herrmann's inferior, though to say such a thing is the height of absurdity. Bernard Herrmann didn't just write movie music, he made a statement and his contributions to the films he worked on rivalled those of the major crew memebers, from actors and director and scriptwriter to the cinematographer. And when Herrmann wrote for lesser films he sometimes provided the one and only thing that made these films watchable (just listen to his score for Journey to the Center of the Earth and you'll know, but if you still can't see/hear it then I hereby revoke your right to watch movies and command you to seek counseling immediately!). Okay, so there you have it, the undisputable truth. Yes, Taxi Driver is, especially in these days of hyperactive overstatement, a boring film to some degree and the music for it does deceive the simple minded among us with its difficult to penetrate veneer. But if you are still stuck in the cranky infant stage of "Waaah! I'm bored, someone stimulate me!" then heaven help you. You need to grow up, and right quick. You need to give things time, you need to seek insight, you need to grow up and get a brain. Don't be swayed by your knee jerk "opinions," learn to understand things, learn to see and hear, or get off my planet right now.
