Music Review: Very nice compilation of Gregorian Chants from the monks of Silos

This CD is a collection of chants from previous CDs released such as Ave Maria, The Soul of Chant, and Easter in Silos. If you don't have these CDs, this collection will get you acquainted with the singing of the Benedictines of Silos in the 1950s. Their chants are very beautiful, notwithstanding some criticisms of the organ accompaniment made in the most recent review; one thing to note here was that the monks, as a result of the previous wars, had to do with a very simple organ. Despite this handicap, the monks' voices are so prayerful and not one of them going out of pitch. There are also 7 chants without organ accompaniment. If you have previous Silos CDs, you will have no need of this; for the others, this is a fine purchase to make.

Continuing its longstanding relationship with the choir of the abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos, Jade Music is releasing Gregorian Chant: The Definitive Collection.

The album regroups a selection of the most beautiful and well-known pieces of chant from the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos. It is ideal for listeners wanting to discover music created in the 12th century music that continues to be passed from generation to generation.

The singing has a special quality a reverent serenity that stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing.
