Music Review: Excellent...if you don't already own all of the EPs

As I sit and listen to this, things seem familiar...strange...because I've heard all these songs before...hmm, oh yeah!...I guess nothing has changed...
"Push Barman to Open Old Wounds" presents a convenient way to transport all of the 7 early EPs around. If you're like me and find yourself grabbing an awkward handful of CDs to play them in your car for good traveling music, then this packaging may be up your alley (I am quite clumsy when carrying a dozen cases at once - 7EPs and 4LPs). And of course, this is the first US release of the songs from "This is Just a Modern Rock Song".
The deluxe edition, for those who are wondering, includes:
Full-size photos of the original EPs as well as full lyrics. Also included are two little stories similar to the story presented about Jane in the "Lazy Line Painter Jane" EP. Finally, an extended credits list and a list of which EP single that each song was originally presented on finishes the attached booklet. According to the notes, these recordings have been re-mastered, however I cannot hear any audible difference between this and the EPs I already own.
The songs are presented in groups according to release date. And for those who are anal about things, the song order for the grouping of songs from "Lazy Line Painter Jane" is out of order on this edition (Photo Jenny and A Century of Elvis are switched).
If you already own the EPs, and you're just going to stash the box on your CD shelf, I'd recommend NOT getting it - but if you find yourself struggling to carry all 7 at once, buy this - it'll be much easier and you'll save on disc switching (at most a quarter of the price compared to the lot). As a side note, this case will not fit in normal or even double sized CD shelves of standard CD case width - it's about 1/8th of an inch to tall.
Of course if you don't have all the EPs yet, I'd recommend getting this excellent compilation.
So I guess I'm happy that Matador was able to get the rights to the four Jeepster recordings. I must admit I was expecting a bit more out of the deluxe edition, but look at the price, IT'S A STEAL! All in all, this well priced set will let the casual B&S fan become a diehard groupie (well it'll at least get you close).

At long last, all seven of Belle And Sebastian's "Jeepster" EPs have been collected into a convenient 2-CD set. Often considered their best work, and previously only available as hard-to-find imports or in a box set, the EPs, consisting of 25 songs recorded from 1996-2001, are now available for the price of a single frontline CD. The four tracks from the EP "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" have never been released in the US before. This deluxe double CD is packaged in a hardbound book.In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the "greatest hits" you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it?s difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. "The State I Am In" has never sounded better, while "Lazy Line Painter Jane," which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band?s best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" is brutal and elegant. ?Mike McGonigal
