Music Review: Sample before you buy - and be aware of duplicates

I consider Beck to be one of the most creative musicians of the current time, and he wows me with his range of material with each new album. As an artist, he is five stars, one of the best. But I give two stars to Guerolito because it has only three tracks I really want to have, because while they are good these tracks do not represent Beck at his finest, and because a lot of the music here is not Beck, except for his voice.
There are many kinds of remixes out there. Those on Guerolito are the kind where most original music and sounds are replaced by keyboards and drum machines, but mixed with some of the original vocals and sounds. They tend to be reimagined by someone else - and how you like them is very subjective.
Fortunately, now we have the option of sampling each track and deciding to buy the ones we like instead of the whole album. While Amazon's high bit-rate mp3 is technically "lossy" compared to the CD original, it is unlikely that most listeners could tell the difference, and I have been satisfied with this format as an alternative to buying CDs, particularly because it lets me cherry-pick my favorite tracks.
Apart from Guerlito, there are two other sources of alternate mixes from Guero that I know of. One is the "exclusive" iTunes Guero remix e-EP that was released just before the Guero CD. Another is the DVD version of Guero that includes seven tracks not found on the standard release. There is some overlap between Guerolito and those other releases.
"Girl" and "Ghettochip Malfunction (Hell Yes)" appear to be the same as those on the iTunes e-EP. They are cute novelty remixes, but for me not worth repeated listening. I would say the same about the other tracks on the iTunes EP (which are not on this CD). Technically the quality would be better on this CD - iTunes used a much lower bitrate in 2005 and may still - but the trick with these tunes is that they were made with music samples from old 8-bit video game consoles, so bitrate is probably not an issue.
"Broken Drum" and "Clap Hands" are apparently the same versions as on the Guero DVD. I like this "Broken Drum" remix a lot. It is noted as the "Boards of Canada Remix" on the DVD. "Clap Hands" is good fun. Neither would be put on a Beck's Greatest Hits collection if he ever had one, but both would be enjoyed by many fans.
Because I am an Air fan, I downloaded "Heaven's Gate" even though I was not greatly moved by the original sample, to see if it would grown on me. It's more interesting to hear the whole track than the small sample Amazon posts - because the remix evolves.
Judging by the other reviews found here, opinions vary a lot. I suggest you take the time to audition the tracks before you decide to buy the whole CD or individual tracks.
