Music Reviews of Live at the BBC

Music Review: Live At The BBC
Rating: 5 Stars

This CD will give the listener a view into The Beatles prior to 1964. Many of the songs are from their playlist going back to their Hamburg days. Most of the selections are just the four Beatles, no double tracking, no studio magic, just their normal gig performances, done for the BBC radio microphones. One striking feature to me is the excellence of George Harrison's lead guitar. He is and was one of the very best. His lead work goes beyond what was typical and expected of that day and is a precursor of what rock guitar would become. He is a master of the Rock-a-billy style, yet with a definite Liverpool sound. Their wit, humour, and incredible charisma also is very evident in the chat with the various MCs prior to playing. The CD also gives fascinating insight into the popular music of the early 60s, just prior to the British invasion. Live At The BBC is a must have not only for the Beatles fan, but anyone interested in music history of the 20th Century.

Music Review: Alright, but Great if you like Live Albums
Rating: 2 Stars

If you're a fan of anything live the Beatles have done, then this album is just right for you. There are funny snipits of interviews and conversations they've had with the BBC that will make you laugh. There are also a couple of songs previously unheard like John's cover of "Memphis, TN" and Paul's version of "Til There Was You" is actually better than the recorded album version on this take.

But if I have this CD on my ipod I find myself skipping the majority of the songs because they just aren't as good as their best work. So this album is just okay for me.

The insert is great. Lots of pictures, some previously not ever seen. Many taken at the BBC studios.

If you're a die-hard Beatles fanatic, then definitely buy. If you're just starting out, buy their other albums first before this one. Get to know their music first. This is definitely not for the faint of heart :)

Music Review: The Beatles As They Were Meant To Be Heard
Rating: 5 Stars

This is the early-day Beatles, a time in their career when they weree singing a lot of cover songs and rocking hard. Songs like "Some Other Guy" and "Hippy Hippy Shake" that had been played at the Cavern Club and Hamburg, were also staples of these early radio shows. The Beatles are heard here covering songs by Chuck Berry, Little Richard and the like. It's great that they add their own style to songs that were originally performed by their influences. They were just a great little rock band, in the days before experimentation and LSD. This is the best.

Of course The Beatles play many of their own hits as well. "All My Loving," "A Hard Day's Night," "Ticket to Ride" and many more can all be heard. And the spoken words in between songs add a special flavor to the CD, almost like an actual radio broadcast. This collection is thrilling, and highly recommended.

Music Review: Beatles at the "Beeb"
Rating: 4 Stars

This is apparently a new CD version of a radio show done years ago called "The Beatles at the Beeb." In the Beatles early days, before they made it to America, they had a weekly show on the BBC, on which they played live in the studio. The first half of the collection is the best, because it's songs we haven't heard before. A lot of rock-n-roll classics from Elvis, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, etc. The second half is their own songs we heard on their first few albums. But if you've ever wondered what the Beatles sounded like in Hamburg and at the Cavern Club, this is it. Most of the songs they did a very good job on, though a few are a bit rough. I rated it a 4 as much for its historical value as for its musical value. All big Beatles fans should add this to their collection.

Music Review: Sounds good in Mono
Rating: 3 Stars

The Beatles' "Live at the BBC" is entirely in mono, and it sounds great in mono, because that was probably the way it was originally recorded. It gives it a sense of oldness.
There are lots of dialogue tracks, which are also fun to listen to. It seems like a real Beatles radio show. The unreleased songs are good, although some of the recordings aren't great quality, but once again, it sounds better the way they really recorded it. It would have been horrible if they'd "remixed" and "Remastered" all the tracks into stereo, and beefed it all up, the way they ruined the Yellow Submarine tracks with the new Yellow Submarine 1999 album.
The Beatles at the BBC is an essential Beatles album.
