Music reviews of Solid Gold Hits (Dig)Music Review: PERSONALLY, I NEED MORE! Rating: 4 Stars
Casual fans only listen to Licensed To Ill, right? Otherwise they have been long on the bandwagon and know it all. Me, I have been down with the B-Boys for years. I have absolutely everything they got on wax... Even the Dr. Numbers remix album that was previously available here but I haven't seen it in months (keep an eye for that one, its amazing!).
There is nothing new on this disc at all, so unless you just got off the bus and this is your first day at school, I would save your money and go buy PAULS BOUTIQUE or another original album (they're all good in their own unique ways).
Although, if you are stubborn and think that you just want a greatest hits anyway (it happens), I will key you into this one with a little breakdown. Since I love talking about the Beasties anyway.
SO WHATCHA WANT and PASS THE MIC are the two hits from CHECK YOUR HEAD (1992), these were the singles because they followed the popular hip hop formula that made the B-Boys famous. HEAD also features a slew of experimental jazz/rock/punk fusions that are like nothing else. These cuts are a bubble compared to the rest but are still very cool.
BRASS MONKEY and NO SLEEP TILL... are big singles from LICENSED TO ILL (1986) the album that sky rocketed them to fame. Also is FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT, a song that will never be left off of a greatest hits album, ever. This is like their first born child, and there isn't a person in the world that doesn't know this song.
CHECK IT OUT, OPEN LETTER TO NYC, and TRIPLE TROUBLE are from TO THE FIVE BORROUGHS (2004) the most recent offering. Um, well, not a bad album, my favorites on that one though were CRAWL SPACE and OH WORD, but I guess thats just me.
HEY LADIES and SHAKE YOUR RUMP are from PAULS BOUTIQUE (1989) this album, (though not commercially a huge success) is a sure fire classic. Of course these songs rule, because everything on that album kicks ACE from here to Pompeii. If you don't have that album, get out of here NOW and go get that first. Your ears will thank you a thousand times.
ROOT DOWN, SURE SHOT, and the rockin' SABOTAGE come from ILL COMMUNICATION. THis album is a mixed bag of stuff. Still cool. Sure Shot is probably my least favorite track on this disc, but its still alright. The other two ROCK!
INTERGALACTIC is the only offering from HELLO NASTY (1998) along with the fatboy slim remix of BODY MOVIN, (this was a cool choice, this version is far superior to the NASTY version.) I would have dug more tracks from this album too, but oh well.
So there it is. A little representation of exactly what you get. Now, I coulkd probably write another fifteen pages on what you don't get, but I won't. I'll leave that up to you to find out. There are no punk rock tracks though, what gives with that?
Ultimately I would say no. The tracks are all solid though, so if you were born yesterday, you will surely enjoy every second of this disc.
