Music Review: Post punk masterpiece

Bauhaus are regarded as one of the founders of goth and 'In the Flat Field' as one of the quintessential goth albums. Therefore, 'In the Flat Field' is an album full of tortured, depressing dirges filled with suicidial angst....right?
Wrong.
The best thing about this album is not what it sounds like, but what it doesn't. Leave your preconceptions about goth at the door, Bauhaus are at heart a post-punk band with a diverse range of influences. Fans of the stereotypical goth sound will enjoy the grinding clatter of the opener 'Double Dare' and the intense 'Stigmata Matyr', while the title track is tortured post-punk that wouldn't be out of place on 'Unknown Pleasures' or 'Metal Box'. A more subdued, slow-burn side of the band is shown on 'God in an Alcove' and the almost restrained 'Spy in a Cab'. And for all their gloom-and-angst image, the band have a very quirky, black sense of humour, as seen on the disturbing but amusing 'St Vitus Dance'.
In a way, it's a shame that Bauhaus' work spawned a genre that has been burdened with so many stereotypes, and these do neither the album nor the band justice. 'In the Flat Field' is simply a classic of its era, and will appeal to a much wider audience than many may think. All post-punk fans should seek it out.
