Music Reviews of Bat Boy (2001 Original Off-Broadway Cast)

Music Review: This Bat Boy can fly!
Rating: 5 Stars

My first exposure to this musical was actually performing it at Portsmouth, NHs' Seacoast Repertory Theater. I was playing (drums) for a production of theirs (42nd Street) and was asked if I'd like to play Bat Boy. Not knowing what to expect, I picked up the CD and was blown away by the music therein. Needless to say, I accepted right away! O'Keefe runs the gamut of musical styles, and the play has never a dull moment. Oh, *ping* "nevermindplease" - Deven May was a great Bat Boy, but Billy Butler, who played him at the Rep, was BORN for the role and IMHO is better than May, which IS hard to do...;-) BUY THIS CD!!!!!!! Better yet, see the show and buy the CD!!!!!!

Music Review: Toung in cheek; hands on sides
Rating: 5 Stars

I saw the show in New York and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. The music by Laurence O'Keefe is a perfect balance between being a good score yet still being intentionally cheezy enough to fit the tone of the show. My personal favorite song is "Three Bedroom House" but they are all good--catchy tunes, clever lyrics, who could ask for anything more? The cast is fantastic, particularly the four principles. May's vocal range and deft comic timing could rival that of anyone on broadway in a particular hit show starring Nathane Lane that shall go nameless. I encourage everyone to hold their bat boy (cd).

I bought this cd because I am a fan of Kerry Butler's, and I wanted to hear her on her first cd. I really didn't know what to expect. I was, however, delightfully surprised. THis album ROCKS!!! I listen to it 24-7! It has everything: a range of music styles(rock, pop, gospel, a little rap, a little opera, tango, country), a wildly offbeat, hilarious, unpredictable story, and best of all, amazing voices! I can't wait to see the show..I know people who have seen it and they say it's awesome! Please buy this cd, it's a must for music fans and even a great investment for those who aren't obsessed with musical theater.

Music Review: One of the best shows I have ever seen
Rating: 5 Stars

Seriously! A friend from out of state took me to see Bat Boy several months ago - he had heard the demo recording and just HAD to see it, so he took me when he was in the city. And I LOVED it. It's seriously one of the funniest shows I have ever seen - very well-crafted on its own, and satiric without being a parody. I do think the ending of the show ("Revelation") is a bit weak, but when compared to the rest of the production, it isn't too much of a letdown. The score is top-notch (esp. "Comfort and Joy" and "Let Me Walk Among You"), and the cast superb.

Music Review: In a cave, many miles to the south...
Rating: 5 Stars

I first heard about Bat Boy through my friend Steve (who also has introduced me to the joys of Unrinetown), and I checked out the website before promptly forgetting about it. Well, then--months later--I saw it as the Best Soundtrack in Yahoo Magazine, and HAD to buy it.

It is, by far, my favourite show, and I'm a musical theater actress and know a lot of shows. (If you care, Songs for a New World is my second favourite, and worth a look) The leads are great, and, now that it's finally closing down, maybe I can finally play Shelley! This CD is worth ever cent, and then some!
