Music reviews of It's That Girl AgainMusic Review: STAR Supernova, has sputtered quite a bit Rating: 2 Stars
Song/track numbers:
1-If Not Now Then When: Excellent, 5 Stars. Thats the way to be, Basia! ( grammer, see if you hear the change in present to past tense, minor but unpolished to me. )
2-Someone for Everyone: Poor 2 Stars (32 sec to 40 , 1:19 to 1:27, 1:51 to 2:25) Here the chords appear mismatched to rest of song and it has undefined tonal mood. Amateurish trumpets are nothing like the Jazzy ones from '94.
3- I Must: Fair, 2 Stars.
Song started so great, just so exciting hearing the driving sound, and vocal harmony I love from earlier... but then the big change to the dark and sinister... but also ugly and unsophisticated. At (1:12s to 1:40s ) which is weird/ out of place/ over the top / perhaps amateurish.-(2:49s to 3:19s)
I hate the arrival here of an old-sound Leslie Organ here, and the echoed sound of "around here" at the ending...sloppy.
4-A Gift: Fair, 2 Stars.- A bore, a bit repetitive with shallow lyrics about "us" but not very romantic.
5-Everybody's On the Move: Very Good, 4 Stars.- Urban dwellers only need apply here. With a little more funky and syncopated danceable treatment it could, and would, be easily used in any NYC dance club. Needs another bridge/passage to really fly.ie: Topically, a verse that expresses the "everybody's grass is Greener..." thought, then write about something Environmental too. as in 'Save the Earth' stuff... as a concept to play off the Tech grove and fast-moving theme.
6-There's a Tear: Excellent, 5 stars. A classic Love song. Has the simple, caring emotion evoked with voices/electric piano.
7-Blame It On the Summer: Pretty Good, 3.5 Stars-A very good basa-nova as we know them for, but the lyrics need a catchier hook, or statement of what is meant by "run away from you" such as why run away?, break-away how? tell a story about 'one summer' maybe.
8-Two Islands: Excellent, 5 stars. THE BEST. A unique and especially soothing song and composition. It will take you away. Powerful like "Yearning"('94)
9-Love Lies Bleeding: Awful, 0 Stars(43 sec to 148sec)- OOooOoohh & following verses sound is a crass/ugly attempt at an eery/painful mood change. The staccato voices and trumpets are painful. She sings it like she is not into-it either. Using "so altruistic" ( a bad sounding word, I would much rather have heard them sing "very unselfish")
10-Winners: Fair, 2.5 Stars.- Just too reliant on various gimmicky percussion and composition not fully developed.
11-They Know Nothing About Us: Very Good, 4 Stars. (1:10 sec -125 sec) Horn passage is not nearly as exquisite as the rest of the song. The minor-note twists in harmony are good improv. though.
12-Amelki Smiech: (Polish lyrics)- Bad 1 Star
(Even in the English language I wouldn't take this song along on my iPod)
The intro keyboard synthesizer is used to BEND the notes. That's plain weird sounding. Babies crying while their parents toast to another drink. what? again odd....like that 'Rachel's Wedding' ending ('94). I do not relate at all to anything here.
13-It's That Girl Again: OK, 2 1/2 Stars.
(8 sec -15) saying "all is good.... and well" comes off kind of oddly redundant, and topically ego reliant. Not much wisdom is relayed here on the girls take on stuff. This music does drag, in pace. There is no soaring emotional vocals? just flat. The end goes well due to the evocative harmonies I love of hers ( 2:30 ). The songs build-up could have gotten really fun and positive after she sings " she has the time, time of her life...". ie: what if there.. bam! Danny 's keyboard solo could go-crazy lifting UP 'that girl" and us. Her/the groups HUGE FANS will not mind some shortcomings.
