Music reviews of Barry White : All-Time Greatest Hits

Music Review: Satin Soul: Let The Music Play
Rating: 4 Stars

'The mistress can never be satisfied ' so states composer, arranger and ultimate "love god" Barry White. And since the mistress he is referring to is Music than I suspect that desire to please will never be completely fulfilled. But on " All- Time Greatest Hits " he does come perilously close to satisfying this listener's wishes in seeking music that is intimate, subtle and incredibly sexy....to say nothing of creating songs that were simply made, not only for the bedroom, but also for the dance floor!

By incorporating R&B, Soul, Funk and no small amount of Disco into his songs Barry White ( affectionately known as the Maestro ) created songs that were earnest in their desires, intensely romantic and ultimately seductive with Barry pleading his case in that honey-bass voice that, I suspect, was copied by many 'second-rate Lothario's' who longed for the role of 'Romeo'....if only for one night! Bookcasing the disc with two instrumentals, the wonderful " Love's Theme " and "Satin Soul " this cd encompasses everything you might wish to own by this amazing soul singer. And while many of the selections do take on a similarity in their origins there is still so very much here to enjoy. Now, with over seventy-seven minutes worth of music there's too much to go into seperately but for me highlight's must include, "I've Got So Much To Give " a ballad that is my absolute favorite, " I'll Do Anything....." an uptempo that finds the singer pleading to his lover ( natch! ) and " Can't Get Enough Of Your Love " possibly his biggest hit that just gets better over the years! And if you enjoy those 'deep-pocket grooves' than you'll love " Honey Please, Can't You See " a track that if it doesn't get you on your feet....than nothing will! OK, just one more, that being " Just The Way You Are " Billy Joel's classic done with Barry's earnest vocals setting a wonderfully different 'spin' on this classic. Barry White was the first composer to introduce the use of a full string section when creating songs geared for an audience that was generally catagorized in the Soul/R&B genre. And because of that vision special thanks should be given to Gene Page who arranged these tunes in that wonderfully Phil Spectorish 'wall of sound' style.

Overall, while I'm aware that with the recent influx of self-appointed 'Romeo/Satin Sheets' soul crooners.... i.e. D'Angelo or Maxwell, that are currently in vogue today, let me state for the record that these 'artists' are pale comparisons to true soul giants such as Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Al Green ( I would add Otis R. and Teddy P. to this list but since I've only so much room.... ). It was these entertainers who created this genre and they are still the standard bearers by which everyone else should be compared to. And, so far, very few have reached these lofty heights. In the end, while Barry White's music doesn't carry the same intensity and fire that some other singers might, owning " All-Time Greates Hits " along with " Let's Get It On " by Marvin and " Let's Stay Together " by Al 'Grits' Green is simply the cornerstone of any truly respectable soul collection ( and no I haven't forgotten Aretha! ). Call it 'old-school' if you like.....I'll just call it 'Satin Soul'. Thank-You Gentlemen!

Description of Barry White : All-Time Greatest Hits

The most hot-buttered of all soul singers, Barry White is an artist whose CDs come with a purpose. To say what that purpose is, is not for a family Web site--but it involves that thing that Mommy and Daddy do at night with the bedroom door closed. All-Time Greatest Hits collects the essential White and Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks onto a packed CD. Are 20 cuts too much? Not with Viagra. That's a kind of medicine that grownups take. --Gavin McNett
For those music buyers who have enjoyed Barry White's music since the early 1970s but may not be devoted enough for the three-CD box set Just for You, this 20-track compilation brings together all of White's major chart hits between 1973 and 1979, along with a couple of entries from his Love Unlimited Orchestra. White's distinctive vocal style--a deep, resonant baritone-bass that oozes sex appeal--was the icing on the cake for those hits; superlative string arrangements (courtesy of the late Gene Page) encased White in a lush setting, while White's hand-picked rhythm section (which included many of Los Angeles's top session players) created a groove that was hard to beat. The combination was lethal: hits like "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," and "You're My First, My Last, My Everything" made White a chart staple and an early king of disco; his skill as a vocal interpreter was fully evident on a 1979 reading of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," another standout on this collection. On the evidence of that track alone, it's hard to believe that, according to legend, White never planned to be a recording artist in his own right and would have been happy to remain in the background as producer and songwriter! --David Nathan
