Music Review: "Aren't Ya Gonna Eat It?"

Since their sudden and surprising success in Canada, BNL were quite well known for their live performances. Each show was different in its own odd way, and each band member went there and was themselves, no one else. Which is probably their key to success when it comes to concerts. Each member of the band likes to have fun, and they have fun at their concerts, what a concept! It only made sense that BNL release a live album for those less fortunate fans that weren't able to see them live. Thus "Rock Spectacle" was born. For many artists, a live album is created for the sole purpose of staying true to a record contract. This is not the case for BNL. They prove that with every release they put time, money, and a special added touch into the mix. "Rock Spectacle" starts off with a shortened version of 'Brian Wilson.' I say shortened because of the fact that the first verse of the song used on "Gordon" is not used on "Rock Spectacle." Although the typical listener does not miss the first verse all that much, I sure do. It gave the song a special personal touch that vanished on "Rock Spectacle." 'Straw Hat And Old Dirty Hank' is unsurprisingly a huge success live, along with 'Break Your Heart.' 'Jane' is a fine song done live (what BNL song isn't). When browsing the songs included on here, I was shocked to see 'When I Fall' included. It is a great song, one that I really cherish. Yet I didn't think it would be performed live very much. 'Hello City' is a song many remember as the first track off of "Gordon." Yet this newly refurbished song is a great listen and more perfect live! 'What A Good Boy' is such an ideal song to perform live, and turns out just as promising as it is! Dropping down to 'If I Had $1,000,000,' the sing along, mentioned by amazon.com's Jeff Bateman is a classic to any fan. 'Uncle Elwyn' is a short preview to the fans who haven't seen BNL live along 'Sweetest Woman.'

The hit Canadian alternative group's 1996 live album with 'Uncle Elwyn' & 'Sweetest Woman' added as hidden & unlisted bonus tracks, for a total of 13 selections (although it only scans as 11).The band's goofy charm and sure-footed melodic sense is in full flower here, and the singalongs on "Brian Wilson" and "If I Had $1000000" are proof of the bond between band and audience. A hidden rap tribute to Ed Robertson's "Uncle Elwyn" is vintage Bill Cosby. --Jeff Bateman
