Music reviews of Everything to Everyone

Music Review: Mature "Ladies" still a fun date.
Rating: 5 Stars

The fact that Barenaked Ladies' latest release "Everything to Everyone" requires a few listens to appreciate it is, I think, a testament to the band's talent and hard-earned success. It also speaks volumes about past efforts and the impact earlier songs have had on fans of the band. Like a past love you can't quite forget, this band's music has a way of touching you in a unique - if not profound - way. So when something new comes along, there can be a reluctance to embrace it for fear that it will never live up to old fond memories. Of course there's no reason for it. "Everything to Everyone" has much of the irreverence, whimsy and humor that has allowed BNL to carve a nice niche in a very crowded marketplace. But what makes this effort unique is that, when you peel away the fun façade, you find these Ladies are more than just a good time. They're smart too. The writing has more depth and relevance than ever before. The sound is fresher. And the musical arrangements are richer and more innovative than they've been. "War on Drugs", for example, is a haunting song about desperation and suicide. It's a familiar theme, covered many times by many artists. But writers Steven Page and Ed Robertson change the script slightly, challenging us to question how the collective "we" handle soulful desperation. Page sings about a viaduct in his hometown of Toronto from which people would jump "when they're out of luck", and how the city built a net to catch their fall. The message is subtle but clear: that's not the solution. The words paint a powerful picture, but it's the music that makes the song stay with you, as it builds from a simple and pretty melody to a bold and purposeful crescendo that - perhaps symbolically - threatens to overtake Page's powerful, pleading lyrics. Yet as uncharacteristically serious and haunting a song like "War on Drugs" is, it doesn't take away from what the Barenaked Ladies aims to be: a fun date. Songs like "Shopping", the band's tongue-in-cheek response (we assume) to President Bush's "keep-shopping-or-the-terrorists-win" call following 9/11, snaps the band back to its whimsical roots. So does "Postcards", a rapping ditty about those silly postcards featuring chimpanzees in various cheesy poses. The earnest "For You" with its cheery mandolin and bouncy melody belies a sorry and self-searching confessional of a man coming to terms with his relationship shortcomings. Even "Maybe Katie" - a song featuring two friends bantering back and forth about the pros and cons of committing to a relationship with an aging single mother - has a fun ring to it.

Although even the most avid fan would have a difficult time comparing Barenaked Ladies to the Beatles, there are some surface similarities. You have a pair of prolific and dynamic song writers in lead men Page and Robertson. You have a kooky and more-than-able drummer in Tyler Stewart. You have the multi-talented Jim Creeggan and Kevin Hearn, both of whom seem slightly more introspective than the rest. But more importantly, you have a group of maturing musicians who are willing to explore and test new territory with every album - and never take themselves too seriously in the process. And few would deny their albums and live shows have managed to inject a shot of fun and freshness to an industry that's been known to take itself much too seriously. "Something For Everyone" is a solid effort that suggests the Barenaked Ladies have plenty more to offer down the road. It also helps reaffirm that the band is much more than the novelty act it's been accused of being...more than just quirky musicians with funny hats.

Description of Everything to Everyone

SPECIAL EDITION: Along with the CD is a DVDA including the entire album in both surround sound and high-resolution stereo as well as 11 acoustic tracks in high resolution, b-sides in surround sound and video features.
From its tongue-in-cheek cover art on down, Barenaked Ladies?s Everything to Everyone is a surprisingly tough-minded survey of early 21st-century culture. Often accused of being too clever for their own good, Toronto?s Ladies here provide a good deal of subtlety along with the expected tunefulness and genre-hopping. "Testing 1,2,3" is a complex song about nostalgia, singing in a rock & roll band that?s loved for perhaps narrow reasons, and watching one?s ex-girlfriend find a new lover. "Maybe Katie" presents two different views of the male fear of commitment before dropping a key bit of information about its title subject. And "Shopping" is a fist-in-velvet-glove tune in the tradition of the Housemartins?s "Happy Hour;" could its happy-go-lucky chorus be a skewering of George W. Bush?s pro-commerce response to Sept. 11? At the very least, it demonstrates that these guys fully understand the art and the implications of being all things to all people. --Rickey Wright
