Music Review: People Who Need Barbra

Barbra Streisand appeared on the scene almost fully-formed as a song stylist. Her first three albums were astonishing and brought her hoardes of fans. However, it was with PEOPLE that she began the almost constant refinement of her interpretive and vocal skills that continues unabated. This album is simply brimming with some of her best recordings, and Streisand sings with more assurance and less affectation than previously noted. "Absent-Minded Me" starts things off with it's odd melodic shifts that allow her to display her bell-clear vocal range, and things get even better from there. "My Lord and Master", "Autumn", "How Does the Wine Taste" and "Supper Time" are terrific examples of Streisand's way with a ballad. She stretches and bends the melody to stress the lyric in a way that few singers dared. Even better is "Will He Like Me?" and when she sings the line "he's just got to" it can melt your heart. Of course, "People" is this sets centerpiece and it deserves its classic status. Her earliest peak performance, this is where the Streisand legend truly began. She sings with supple, soaring tones that are expressive but never overbearing, and she nails the lyric. No one has ever sung this song better and its rangy melody is perfectly suited to Streisand.
Many classic recordings would follow in the years to come, but PEOPLE is where Streisand proved she was more than a quirky though obviously gifted performer. The maturity of her song-styling here made her sound like she'd been around for years...and she was only 22.
