Music reviews of Never GoneMusic Review: BSB is not for everyone, I will give you that .....but at the same time ROCK music isn't for everyone EITHER Rating: 3 Stars
A review by a listener who enjoys ALL kinds of music.
There are TWO (2) SECTIONS in this particular review:
(A) In defense of not only BSB, but many other musical artist out there.
(B) My 2 cents on the album and some unreleased/imported songs
(A) In defense of not only BSB, but many other musical artist out there
I know that a certain percentage of "music lovers" (fans, critics alike) would not classify the style, music composition, or vocal abilities of the Backstreet Boys as remotely great or good. Plus, they may not even consider them real musicians given that they don't play their own instruments (guitars, drums, piano, etc) or what they produce as music. If not music, then let's say they are "VOCAL AND AUDIO ENTERTAINERS." It's still a form of art. The Backstreet Boys are artists. And many of their songs are entertaining. More importantly, music not only encompasses instruments but it also may include one's voice. Just look at opera singers. They don't play instruments but do use their vocal talents; are their performance not a form of music?
There are certain reviewers that can vouched that certain members of the group do play an instrument here and there, although not for each and every song produced. I personally do understand what they mean when such people play the instrument-card. They're probably saying that because BSB don't play instruments for each and every one of their songs, they are not real musicians. The definition of instruments does includes anything from an audio recorder or one of those apparatus that produces distorted sounds, synthesizers, etc to a piano or guitar.
Sure, I can understand that, but...
But if that were the case, BSB would be playing rock/alternative/heavy metal instead of pop music. Whether or not one plays a musical instrument usually is indicative of a few things: rock music or an orchestra ensemble. But one must understand that the Backstreet Boys (BSB) are NOT doing rock music, but rather pop music; which is simply two different genres although there may be overlaps here and there. The bottom line is that the BSB are not rockers; they don't play and perform rock music-that's not what they're all about. They're about pop music, or better yet, "VOCAL AND ADUIO ENTERTAINERS"....entertainers, they are entertaining to a certain percentage of the population but definitely not all.
Secondly, not all rock musicians have great singing voices. Many a times, they even "suck" if you will. Again, I enjoy all kinds of music (predominantly country, pop, rock/alternative). Sometimes you need to accentuate what you do best. For certain percentage of rockers (notice that I'm NOT saying all rockers, but there are a handful) that can't quite sing, they use they musical instruments to essentially drown out or mask their vocals. On top of that, a newly concocted rock piece does not constitute good music. There are plenty of instances where rock artist simply have "fillers" to balance their album. "Fillers," songs that are not great but the artist simply needed a complete the album so that it may be properly marketed.
A note about "copying" other people's music...well you must understand that everything pretty much have been recycled over and over. Hip hop for example is notorious for recycling other genre of music. If an hiphop artist deems a certain beat appropriate, either country, soft rock, alternative, hiphop, classical, etc, they'd attempt to get in contact with that particular company to get permission to use that beat. Yes, lyrically, hiphop songs differ from one another but not a whole a lot.
The bottom line is that BSB has a fairly large fan base. There are folks that enjoy their offerings and that's enough said. Every one has his or her own preference. This is why we as human beings have CHOICES. As with different brand shoes, jeans, stereo system, automobiles, clothing articles, we choose what we like. Certain people like to follow the trend while others do not. If you don't like the stuff, you don't make the purchase. It's simple as that. There is no need to put others down for the simple fact that they don't agree with you. Life is based on making choices, and we all have that right.
But according to the definitions of musician, music and instruments, the Backstreet Boys are (as are others in the industry: U2, The Beetles, Nirvana, Hole, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Gun's N Roses, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Soundgarden, Styx, Marilyn Manson, David Bowe, Audioslave, Deftones, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Cold Play, Adena, Dove, My Chemical Romance, Nine Inch Nails, Rob Thomas, MatchBox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, R.E.M., Soul Asylum, Good Charlotte, Evanescence, 3 Doors Down, Ray Charles, B52s, Alkaline Trio, Eric Clapton, Anita Baker, Garbage, Madonna, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Hiliary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, NSYNC, 5ive, A1, Spice Girls, Westlife, Shania Twain, Chely Wright, Faith Hill, Reba McIntyre, Jessica Andrews, Willie Nelson, Chalee Tennison, Jill Sobule, Tim McGraw, George Strait, Brad Paisley, Celine Dion, John Tesh, Stevie Nicks, Tupac, Dr. Dre, Notorious BIG, Nelly, Enimen, 50 Cents, Ice T, Ice Cube, Beastie Boys, Destiny Child, Mariah Carey, etc, etc, etc, etc...you get the picture)

2. JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW 4.6/5 (upbeat ballad-esque, `combo of shape of my heart + the one)

5. I STILL... 4.9/5 (upbeat ballad-esque, `I want it that way'-ish)
6. POSTER GIRL 3.8/5 (Does not sound like the Backstreet Boys, more upbeat, R&B-esque. Resembles R&B hip/hop group Blackstreet)
7. LOSE IT ALL 5/5 ( Nick Carter Starts it off but NOT a solo offering. Probably my favorite song on the album. Ballad-esque)
8. CLIMBING THE WALLS 5/5 (Brian starts it off, Upbeat "Quit Playing with My Heart + As Long as you love me combo but edgier)

ALBUM OVERALL: 3.72 / 5 (but better than prior offerings)
Unreleased/Import findings: (*the majority if not all of the following is predominantly R&B/HipHoppish_
1. Songs for the Unloved 3.3/5 (Upbeat/R&B, "We've got it goin' on-esque", Most of the lyrics consist of "this one is for the...")
2. Rush Over Me 3.1/5 (Slow/R&B, Set Adrift A Memory Bliss-esque, but NO where near as "catchy" as "No One else comes close" Or "Spanish Eyes", "Catchiness" near the likes of Set Adrift A memory Bliss)

4. Color My World 2.76/5 (Ballad/slow, Similar to "Rush over me")
5. Don't Disturb This Groove 2.1/5 (Something that would have belonged on their first album; Set Adrift a memory Bliss but not accapella-ish)
6. Love Is 3.3/5 (R&B; Something that Justin Timberlake may have done; sounds kind of like him too, "Cry Me A River" but without the heavy beat in the background plus not a strong of a song, more ballad-esque that Justin would have done)
7. Memories 4.1/5 (Ballad/Slow, "Perfect Fan-esque" )
8. Forces of Nature 1.9 /5 (Bad Chorus, couldn't wait til song was over)
9. Set It Off 4.7/5 (Extreme Upbeat/R&B/HipHOP, and nothing less, Something that Justin Timberlake would have definitely done, "Rock your Body-esque" but even harder. "Larger than Life" ish but much harder/Hiphop harder/Justin Timberlake harder.)
