Music Review: Don't "Let Go" of this CD

Let Go is the first album by pop rock singer Avril Lavigne, released on June 4, 2002. It was highly successful, being certified platinum six times in the United States and seven times in Australia. In Canada it received a diamond award for surpassing sales of ten million. It has sold over 13 million copies.
"Losing Grip" is the fourth single and last single (except in Australia where "Mobile" was released) from Avril Lavigne's top 5 album Let Go. It is also her weakest United States single to date, only charting at #64 on the Billboard Hot 100; however, it did get some airplay in other countries, charting in the top 20 in Australia and the UK. It was released in late spring of 2003 after the success of "I'm With You". The song was written and produced by Avril Lavigne and C. Magness. The song is slightly heavier than most of her poppier songs on Let Go (possibly the explanation of its weak success). It is about Lavigne "losing grip" with her boyfriend as they are just not meant to be. "Don't Tell Me", the first single from her sophomore album Under My Skin, is said to almost be a follow-up or part two of the song as Avril tells her boyfriend she doesn't want him because of his sexually rude behavior. It was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance in 2003.
"Complicated" is Avril Lavigne's first single, released in 2002 from her debut album, Let Go. The single reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lavigne's first top-ten single. The single also reached number three in the United Kingdom and number one in Australia. It also climbed to number one in Mexico. Based on its chart performance, the song is also Lavigne's most successful single, and was also one of the most successful releases of 2002. Not surprisingly, the song is also considered to be her signature song. The song also has a parody by "Weird Al" Yankovic called A Complicated Song.The song was written by Avril Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. In this pop-rock anthem, Lavigne finds herself in a complicated situation with a boy in her life. She enjoys his company when they're driving in his car, but around everyone else, he becomes somebody else, and can't relax as if he's always paranoid and watching his back. She also feels that he is trying too hard to fit in by wearing preppy clothes. Although she does like him, his actions disturb her to denounce, "Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else, gets me frustrated..." The song has also met some controversy over its songwriting. In several interviews given while promoting her debut album, Lavigne claimed that "Complicated" was inspired by her life, that she was a singer-songwriter who was very much involved in the creative process of making music, and that she had written most of "Complicated" with The Matrix. However, The Matrix revealed that they had written most of "Complicated", and that Lavigne had only added a few minor melodic or lyrical changes to the song. When confronted with the truth of the matter, Lavigne claimed she did not have much choice in the matter, as her boss, L.A. Reid, had pressured her to put the songs with The Matrix on the album, and she had feared that she might be dropped from her label if she didn't comply. Lavigne's claim to be a singer-songwriter was also brought up, but she defended her actions saying that she is usually involved with most of her music (except for the songs co-written with The Matrix).
"Sk8er Boi" is the second single from Avril Lavigne's debut album, Let Go. Released in 2002, the single reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lavigne's second top-ten single there, number eight in the United Kingdom, and number three in Australia. "Sk8er Boi" also peaked at number five in Mexico and number twenty-eight in Canada. The song is best known for establishing Lavigne's place in the music industry. With the success of her previous single, "Complicated", many critics had written her off as a fluke; with the success of "Sk8er Boi", Lavigne proved that she was no one-hit wonder. The song was written by Avril Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards), and produced by The Matrix. In this guitar-driven uptempo, Lavigne tells the tale of the turbulent courtship between a "sk8er boi" (skater boy) and a girl who did ballet dancing. Although they both want each other, the girl rejects him against her own true feelings due to peer pressure. Articles in J-14 Magazine and Teen People trace the inspiration of the song to former San Diego rock-quartet frontman, Marc Gould, whom Lavigne dated during the production of her album in 2001-2002.
"I'm with You" is a pop song written by Canadian singer Avril Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards) for Lavigne's debut album, Let Go. The protagonist of this ballad sings: "Take me by the hand, take me somewhere new. I don't know who you are but I... I'm with you..." It was released as the album's third single in 2002 (see 2002 in music) and 2003. It reached number one in Mexico, the top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (Lavigne's third single to reach the top ten), the top ten in the United Kingdom and the top twenty in Canada. "I'm with You" received radio and television airplay in Australia, but it was not released there so that sales of the album Let Go would increase. It was used in the film Bruce Almighty. The single's music video involves Lavigne, who is seen alone, trying to find someone. Most of the video is in slow motion but Lavigne's mouth movements are in sync with the song's vocals. This was achieved by recording the footage while the song was played twice as fast. "I'm with You" was nominated for a 2004 Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" but lost to Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful".
"Mobile" was the fifth single released from the album, and was released in Australia as a radio-only track. It was later used in the 2004 film Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst.
"Unwanted" was not released as a single, and though many people don't seem to like it very much, I personally think it is a great song, full of angst, telling a story about someone who doesn't appreciate her very much and doesn't want her.
"Tomorrow" is the first official ballad of the album, unless you count "I'm With You". It is not one of my personal favourites and tells about how her feelings can change. "I don't know how I'll feel tomorrow...".
"Anything But Ordinary" is a regular teen anthem, where Lavigne constantly tells the listen how weird she is. Everyone can relate to the song and it is a must-listen-to.
"Things I'll Never Say" is the average song on this CD. The only reason I don't like this one very much is because it sounds too much like other songs on the album. It does not stand out in the way that it could.
"My World" is a song that basically describes Lavignes hometown and her growing up experiences from cutting grass to getting fired from KFC and beating boys up. A good, fun song.
"Nobody's Fool", even though it is Lavigne's almost pathetic attempt to rap, is a great song. You may not like it right away, but it will grow on you, I promise.
"Too Much To Ask" is a good song, but it gives off the same message as "Complicated".
"Naked" is by far one of the best songs on the album, no doubt about it. It's kind of hard to explain it, but if you listen to it you will know what I mean.
If you are looking for a good listen, then this is the album for you. Avril Lavigne has the major potential to become a great artist and I'm sure great things can be expected from her in the future.

The catchy choruses of Go are substantial, though, thanks to Lavigne's riff-driven melodies and powerful vocals, which at times adopt the unorthodox intonation quirks of fellow Canadian Alanis Morrissette. The nuanced, dynamic "Losing Grip," "My World" (which perfectly captures the ennui of suburbia), and the buoyant power-pop blast "Sk8er Boi" are the collection's highlights. But Lavigne's honest yet awkward words weigh down the likes of "Mobile," "I'm with You," and "Naked."
