Music Review: Avenged Sevenfold's best album, and sadly their ownly decent one as well.
Rating: 4 Stars
As a whole, I don't really like Avenged Sevenfold, but this album in particular is genuinely great. City of Evil is the follow-up to the lackluster Waking The Fallen. They've completely changed their style and have gone for a more traditional heavy metal sound. Call it wussy nu metal if you wish, but in my opinion this album sounds like old-school heavy metal with an alternative rock singer. Not necessarily the best combination but it works. The guitar work is actually fairly impressive, much better than I was expecting and very polished. The drumming is solid, nothing extraordinary but it gets the job done. Surprisingly enough, the bass is a pretty big standout, he does some really good work on here. My favorite tracks on here are "M.I.A.", "Burn It Down", and "Wicked End". This is a great album, even if it's unfortunately their only decent one. Plus, any band with a Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas reference deserves a chance.
Unfortunately their self titled follow up album, Avenged Sevenfold, is complete crap. I would even go so far as to say it's a step below Waking The Fallen or even their debut. How this band can have a mediocre attempt at the extreme metal genre, then completely change their style and make this great album, and then follow it up with a crappy super mainstream sellout of an album is beyond me, but that's just how it is.
