Music Review: Avant - Avant

Avant has been, and always will be one of my favorite artists of all time. He has a phenominal voice, and hes got swagger. But the one glaring problem with Avant, has always been his inability to make complete, solid, well rounded albums. Besides Director, which was a great album, all three of his other albums (My Thoughts, Ecstasy, and Private Room) were decent at best. But with this album we see a more grown and sexy Avant. The production is alot crisper and cleaner than on his previous efforts, with the exception of a few tracks on Director. The thing that does worry me a little bit with this album is the lack of promotion. Avant made the switch from Geffen records, to Capitol Records in mid 07, and unfortunetly Capitol is known for not pushing their R&B artists very well. While i am sure Avant will still get some decent sales, i dont think we will see any big hit singles off this album, or any huge first week sales as well. Director was easily Avant's best album, by far. And this album is definetly his second best album. But in all honesty, thats not saying much. Especially when all three of Avant's albums before Director were terrible, saying this is his second best doesnt really mean a whole lot. The album isnt bad by any means. It's just, at times the album's slow jam vibe tends to drag because the production is kind of bland on some of these tracks. The first single "When It Hurts" is great mid tempo ballad about how lovers have to stick it out even when the relationship hurts in order for it to work. And the R. Kellyish babymaker "Out Of Character" is a stand out as well. But then lame and corny tracks like "Perfect Gentleman" and "Material Things" tend to detract heavily from an already short album, with 11 tracks. Avant has always been an underdog in the music business because hes one of those artists that have a decent amount fans and hits and record sales, but never truly becomes a star. Avant's been around since 2000 when My Thoughts came out. But the problem with Avant, like i said earlier, is that hes never been able to give us a great album (besides the good Director), his albums have been, and most likely always will be very inconsistent. And that is the same on this album, when its good, its good, but when its bad, its really bad. Again, overall the album is just average, nothin to amazing and nothing to terrible, truth be told though, i am pretty disappointed. I was expecting a lot better...
