Music Review: Just Like The EP, This Delivers High Octane, Crazy Music

I'm sure like many others, I'll admit I first heard of Autopilot Off after popping in the DVD for Sum 41's "Does This Look Infected." I was instantly hooked by Nothing Frequency, and then more so by Long Way To Fall and Indebted. For the most part, MAKE A SOUND contains all those things and more of what made those songs amazing. It's hard to describe, but this music just pumps me up so much, and that hasn't happened much lately for me. It's probably got more to do with production than anything else, but his voice is mature enough to not put it in the pop punk genre (which is their roots as Cooter), and the guitar is just so driving, and fast, and crazy. A few others have said lost prophets, which may be true I really wouldn't know, but I instantly thought of Zebrahead's MFZB when I heard the soaring choruses, and one of the more deep voices of "pop" punk bands, really just making this a great rock cd. Granted there are three or four songs here with a poppier, softer edge to appeal to the masses, but if you buy this type of music you're used to it. The only other negative thing I wanted to bring up is: Who picks these singles? (and this could be applied to Less Than Jake (She's Gonna Break Soon was the worst song on Anthem), Mest (Jaded), and a lot of other bands from this genre). Yeah, maybe "What I Want" is somewhat if even barely catchy, but the single is what many people base their decision to buy the cd on, what best represents the bands style, and What I Want doesn't at all...so I would warn to not form an opinion just on that...because I almost did. But, that whole aspect really just hurts the band, and is an aspect of a record industry I will never understand. So In Conclusion, this cd is real good and real cheap (just like the hundreds of other cds that used to get no radio play from this genre). Unfortuneately this one will get lots of play, but the rest of the 8 or 9 songs rock so hard, and its so much better than the crap, the utter crap they play on the radio...even the so called punk they DO put on the radio, this cd is well worth the ridiculous 6.99 price tag at Best Buy.
