Music reviews of Confield

Music Review: A Field of Ripe Perspective Ready for Harvest
Rating: 5 Stars

Everything folks say about Confield is true. Forget everything you know about industrial music, this is easily the most terrifying album of all time. Thus, it's about as accessible as a flight of stairs is to someone who can only maneuver about with a Zimmer frame. But I don't need a Zimmer frame; I find I can just trot right up the blasted staircase any old time I feel like it. This perplexes me. Am I depraved to thoroughly enjoy this album upon first listen? Am I predisposed to homicidal psychosis because "Parhelic Triangle" immediately stole my breath away as if I had just beheld the most beautiful woman I had ever seen for the first time? Is it an omen that I instantly found "Pen Expers" to be irrepressibly jubilant? Gee, I sure hope so!
Yes, everything they say about this album is true. Everything, that is, except the ludicrous allegations that Confield is just amorphous cacophony that evokes only the monotone emotion of morose insularity. That's preposterous and very irresponsible. With one fell listen through, I proved the naysayers erroneous. If Confield is just mordant racket, then any schmuck could just slap an "Ae" & a Warp insignia on a recording of some ominous clanging run through Max/MSP and Autechre fanatics would gobble it up. But since even that suggestion is an abominable insult to even the dopiest Autechre geek, everyone must admit that abhorrence of Confield is only an opinion.
Um... I believe that's enough haranguing for today.
Confield is the most appropriate title that has been bestowed upon an Autechre album since their marvelous debut was dubbed "Incunabula". The portraits Confield conveys are all renderings of a barren wasteland that was once known as a bucolic panorama. Dilapidated grain elevators & looming silos dot the landscape. What scant vegetation dares venture beyond the womb of its seed is tormented by harsh parchment. The skies above are as dusty & brown as the accursed soil beneath them. The only extant objects that even remotely resemble living creatures are the scores of gnarled cadavers that rise from their graves in the evening to boogie 'til dawn. As utterly futile as this scenery is, it really is not absolutely desolate. Life does thrive in the Confield, even if it doesn't quite fit the standard accepted definition of 'thriving'. The joy of Confield is the contentment of simply existing despite all odds. It just requires some major readjusting of perspective focus to see that.
So for those who remain skeptical, I assure you that this album is one of the most worthwhile in years. Why? Because once you can see the beauty of Confield, you will seriously appreciate life in ways you never thought an album could reveal, I swears. It really is that profound.
Now that naysayers can read this review, I hope their consciences really get on their case for vilifying something that brought a fellow human so much joy. I also hope this review will implore anyone reading it to spend some time in Confield, because it's a blast gettin' your gloaming groove on with decomposing carcass comrades, fellow victims of the second law of thermodynamics. Because entropy affects us all. And that is the paradoxical pulchritude of Confield.
Is this all hyperbole? Snag yourself a copy to find out.

Description of Confield

Electro, techno, hip-hop, ambient, modern classical, geometry and chaos theory might begin to describe Autechre. Their latest release has 9 tracks and a running time of over 62 minutes. 9 tracks. 2001 release.
Confield's name and its digitally dissected geometrical artwork are illustrative analogies to Autechre's working methods. Sean Booth and Rob Brown use specially developed software to shape, slice, and dice beats and sounds. Despite the English duo's past as acid-house-loving hip-hop kids, the music they make now is resolutely undanceable. In fact, anyone who tries to move to Confield's nine tracks is cruising for a date with the chiroprator. Over and over Autechre render their rhythms irregular by cutting segments out of a pattern or by putting them into reverse. They aren't completely averse to melody, and the opening track "VI Scose Pose" proves that they can compose a lovely one. More often, however, their focus is on wedding fractured rhythms and intriguing textures, like the bell-like sound waves that pulse through the transmission-trouble beats of "Parhelic Triangle." --Bill Meyer
