Music reviews of Can't Love, Can't Hurt

Music Review: Sweet and totally improved...
Rating: 4 Stars

I kind of wrote Augustana off after delving into their debut album `All the Stars and Boulevards'. While I still adore `Boston' I find that the album as a whole gets less and less interesting with each listen. If it weren't for `Boston' I'd probably never even put the disc in the CD player anymore. So, I was kind of against owning their sophomore album, `Can't Love, Can't Hurt'. I saw it sitting on the shelf at the store and swore I wouldn't even pick it up; and then I heard `Sweet and Low'.

Why is that song so brilliant?

So, with that wonderful heart-swelling chorus ringing in my memory I set off to purchase a CD I was almost certain I'd regret owning. What I found was that Augustana, while still shy of greatness, really built on their debut to provide the listener with a more matured and more accomplished sophomore album. `Can't Love, Can't Hurt' has a number of great tracks, and while there are still a couple duds, this album is far from the redundant uninspired `...Boulevards'.

For me, the only songs that kind of rub me as boring or skipable are `Either Way, I'll Break You Heart Someday' and `Rest, Shame, Love'.

The rest of the album is pretty darn good!

`Hey Now' is a nice way to open, showing some real restraint and showcasing the bands talent for the ballad. These guys really excel in soft and subtle, yet heartfelt and earnest songs. Just listen to the SUBLIME `Twenty Years', one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. This soft piano laden track is exactly the proof anyone needs to know that this band is evolving in all the right ways. `Fire' is another beautiful song that showcases the piano as the instrument of choice, perfectly complimenting the other instrument in play; the voice. The closing song `Where Love Went Wrong' is another stellar example of this bands evolution.

I love the almost rustic country sound of `Dust'. It has a very unique musical texture, when you compare it to the rest of the album, and I really like that. It feels `dusty', and that works wonders here.

`I Still Ain't Over You' and `Meet You There' bring the band back to the upbeat rock that littered their debut album, except that this time around it feels fresher (maybe because it's not the core of the entire album). `Meet You There' especially has a very fun and catchy atmosphere that aids a delightful air to the album. Just watch for that dreaded `bomb'. Didn't expect that, but whatever; I'm an adult.

Best in show once again is the first single. These guys really know how to pick a single. I even think that `Sweet and Low' is better than `Boston'. I just totally eat up these heart touching emotional ballads, and the words here are just so touching (that whole chorus line almost brings me to tears). I mean, I'm almost tempted to say that this could be the ONLY good song on the album and it would have still been worth the $10 I spent on it.

So, for a sophomore effort that preceded an uninspired let-down, this is a huge step in the right direction. After this, I'll most definitely be checking out their third album!

Description of Can't Love, Can't Hurt

Can t Love, Can t Hurt is 10 studiously-chosen cuts of modern, melodic, piano-driven rock, informed by a love of classic pop/rock songwriters from The Beatles to Tom Petty and covering deeper subject matter than the band s debut.
The most memorable line of the hit single "Sweet and Low" from Augustana's sophomore set, Can?t Love, Can?t Hurt, goes like this: "Hold me down, sweet and low, little girl." What that means is anybody?s guess. But on a record this rich with tenderness, it hardly matters. Front man Dan Layus and company have come a long way since 2005's All The Stars and Boulevards: this go-round, the piano's the thing, and it complements ballads like the heartsick "Twenty Years" and "Fire"--as gorgeous a lament as it gets on a record by a band of 20-something dudes--beautifully. In addition to tweaking the music, Layus seems to have made a commitment to laying off the whining; the dab of youthful shrillness that worked its way into "Boston," the 2006 hit that put the band on the map, has been put aside in favor of a near-whisper on tracks like "Dust," a sexy slow rocker that carries a whiff of Neil Young. If there?s a quibble here, it's that Augustana held back not on quality (Can?t Love, Can?t Hurt?s production is so bright it practically gleams), but on quantity: at 10 tracks, the album that launched "Sweet and Low" is overly short and sweet. --Tammy La Gorce
